{"id":81335,"date":"2015-12-15T08:17:08","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T13:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=81335"},"modified":"2015-12-14T16:25:08","modified_gmt":"2015-12-14T21:25:08","slug":"sir-winston-churchill-sanctity-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sir-winston-churchill-sanctity-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Winston Churchill on the sanctity of life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The new book <em>God &amp; Churchill: How the Great Leader&#8217;s Sense of Destiny Changed His Troubled World and Offers Hope for Ours\u00a0<\/em>by Jonathan Sandys (great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill) and Wallace Henley delves into a lesser explored aspect of Churchill&#8217;s life: his Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the book we see clear insight as to what made Churchill an upright wartime leader. In sharp contrast to Adolf Hitler, Churchill was undergirded with humility in his appreciation for the dignity of all human life, even the lives of those behind enemy lines. Churchill included the unborn in his concern&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Churchill, in his admiration for the Sermon on the Mount, would have known what Jesus taught about retaliation, and he may have recognized his own failure to measure up in his practical management of the war. This awareness may have helped to produce the humility that Churchill sometimes exhibited. More important, it could have made him realize how much he needed grace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Whatever the case, Churchill\u2019s heart ached for many years. During his 1949 trip to the United States, someone told him about a monument to the Hiroshima victims at Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the atomic bomb had been tested. Churchill wondered aloud if this meant the Americans \u201chad a bad conscience because the atom bomb was dropped.\u201d Randolph, Churchill\u2019s son, remarked that saturation bombing during the Second World War was \u201can equal horror.\u201d Churchill\u2019s eyes filled with tears as he talked about the bombing of Germany\u2019s cities. \u201cTens of thousands of lives were extinguished in one night,\u201d he said. \u201cOld men, old women, little children\u2014yes, yes, little children about to be born.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">God &amp; Churchill, pg. 110-111<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-82525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/God-Churchill-cover.jpg\" alt=\"God &amp; Churchill: How the Great Leader's Sense of Destiny Changed His Troubled World and Offers Hope for Ours\" width=\"212\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/God-Churchill-cover.jpg 333w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/God-Churchill-cover-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/>Another touching moment appears in Churchill&#8217;s letter\u00a0to\u00a0his wife when she was expecting a new baby after the loss of their\u00a0toddler daughter, Marigold, who had died of septicemia. Clementine wrote\u00a0to her husband about her continuing grief, and he replied,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I think a gt deal of the coming kitten &amp; about you my sweet pet. I feel it will enrich yr life and brighten our home to have the nursery started again. I pray to God to watch over us all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Don\u2019t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
