{"id":80990,"date":"2015-11-25T13:10:14","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T18:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=80990"},"modified":"2015-11-25T12:54:02","modified_gmt":"2015-11-25T17:54:02","slug":"planned-parenthood-aclu-sue-maine-fund-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-aclu-sue-maine-fund-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Planned Parenthood, ACLU sue Maine to fund abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsh6.com\/story\/news\/local\/2015\/11\/24\/aclu-maine-files-lawsuit-over-mainecare-abortion-coverage\/76346930\/\">are suing<\/a> Maine&#8217;s Department of Health and Human Services to reverse its ban on subsidizing abortion through the MaineCare health program for low-income residents.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit contends that the ban violates the state Constitution&#8217;s guarantees of equal protection and the pursuit of safety and happiness.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->ACLU of Maine legal director Zachary Heiden said that poor women having to pay for abortions out-of-pocket &#8220;might mean going without food, not paying bills, delaying medical care [&#8230;] all of that is a bad idea for women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Similar lawsuits have successfully forced 13 states to subsidize abortions for Medicaid recipients, but have failed in eight.<\/p>\n<p>The office of Maine Governor Paul LePage, a Republican, criticized the lawsuit as a &#8220;frivolous public relations stunt,&#8221; noting that because federal federal tax dollars are forbidden from directly subsidizing elective abortions, Planned Parenthood and the ACLU&#8217;s victory would force Maine taxpayers to fund abortion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union are suing Maine&#8217;s Department of Health and Human Services to reverse its ban on subsidizing abortion through the MaineCare health program for low-income residents.
