It doesn&#8217;t."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><ul>\n<li>A \u201cBrave &amp; Unprecedented,\u201d \u201ctruly awesome\u201d move that &#8220;Just Changed TV Forever\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bustle.com\/articles\/125163-olivia-pope-had-an-abortion-on-scandal-it-was-a-brave-unprecedented-move\">Nicole Pomarico, Bustle<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Viewers \u201cstunned\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2015\/11\/20\/scandal-stuns-viewers-with-abortion-scene-in-the-seasons-winter-finale\/\">Emily Yahr, Washington Post<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cShock\u2026 Fans cheer\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2015\/11\/20\/scandal-abortion\">James Hibberd, Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cPowerful message\u2026 groundbreaking\u2026 such a big deal\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/olivia-popes-abortion-got-1-minute-of-airtime-and-thats-all-it-needed_564e97c6e4b0879a5b0a6cc0\">Jessica Samakow, Huffington Post<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cShonda Goes There\u2026 sets off an explosion of discourse\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/watch-the-abortion-scene-from-last-nights-scandal-1743728436\">Clover Hope, Jezebel<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cDaring\u201d and \u201cmagnificent\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/11\/20\/olivia_popes_right_to_choose_scandals_daring_on_screen_abortion_and_fantasy_filibuster_for_reproductive_rights\/\">Sonia Saraiya, Salon<\/a><\/li>\n<li>\u201cPerfect\u201d television \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2015\/11\/20\/scandal_s_take_on_abortion_and_the_planned_parenthood_fight_was_perfect.html\">Christina Cauterucci, Slate<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of these breathless accolades at once can only mean one thing: another TV character\u2019s gotten an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Live Action\u2019s Cassy Fiano <a href=\"\/news\/scandal-promotes-planned-parenthood-sets-abortion-scene-to-silent-night\/\">has excellently dissected<\/a> the moral backwardness and political deceit teeming from this week\u2019s episode of the ABC political drama Scandal, in which Kerry Washington\u2019s lead character Olivia Pope has an out-of-the-blue abortion, though there\u2019s one more aspect of the episode, and a few gems from its fans, that warrant further attention.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->First, this line <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bustle.com\/articles\/125163-olivia-pope-had-an-abortion-on-scandal-it-was-a-brave-unprecedented-move\">from<\/a> Bustle\u2019s Pomarico:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">All we knew is that she made her choice, and carried it out rather unceremoniously. Because for Olivia, that&#8217;s what it was: Her choice, and she didn&#8217;t justify it. And more importantly, she didn&#8217;t have to \u2014 just like she didn&#8217;t have to tell Fitz that she was pregnant, which she obviously chose not to do shortly before ending their relationship.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fitzgerald Grant, the show\u2019s President of the United States, is implied (though not confirmed) to be the father, and the dutiful \u201creproductive justice\u201d enthusiasts are totally cool with keeping him in the dark that he had a son or daughter, but doesn\u2019t anymore because Mom decided to kill him\/her.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s another flippant, callous reminder that according to pro-abortion orthodoxy, <a href=\"\/news\/amanda-marcottes-new-low-demonizing-grieving-fathers-of-aborted-children\/\">fathers&#8217; feelings on the deaths of their children simply don&#8217;t matter<\/a>. Because only a right-wing, anti-choice religious nut would think that \u201cgender equality\u201d means equally affirming the worth and dignity of both sexes\u2019 perspectives. No, apparently it actually means women should be <a href=\"\/news\/house-of-cards-gets-faux-feminists-to-publicly-endorse-lying-for-abortion\/\">just as duplicitous and insensitive<\/a> as they imagine men to be. Modern, dominant feminism isn\u2019t a moral quest; it\u2019s a revenge fantasy.<\/p>\n<p>Appallingly, our next nugget, the opening paragraph of Saraiya\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2015\/11\/20\/olivia_popes_right_to_choose_scandals_daring_on_screen_abortion_and_fantasy_filibuster_for_reproductive_rights\/\">Salon post<\/a> on the subject, might make the above seem positively merciful by comparison:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Say what you will about last night\u2019s winter finale of \u201cScandal,\u201d \u201cBaby, It\u2019s Cold Outside\u201d\u2014I found it a little sloppy\u2014but on the issues, it\u2019s magnificent. And pointed: That title is macabre, given that we watch Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) go to a deserted clinic on Christmas Eve to undergo a first trimester abortion. A machine vacuum aspiration uses suction to withdraw fetal tissue. Baby, it\u2019s cold outside, indeed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Baby, it\u2019s cold outside, indeed<\/em>?! Even if the episode title\u2019s appropriation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wVfrtmzpOuY&amp;spfreload=10\">classic Christmas tune&#8217;s<\/a> name wasn\u2019t originally meant as a grotesque pun, Saraiya certainly made the connection. She may have taken smug satisfaction in her \u201ccleverness\u201d and not given it a second thought, but I hope the \u201chumor\u201d was worth the cost\u2014recognizing that we\u2019re talking about babies destroys whatever sliver of plausible deniability pro-aborts have against the charge that they <em>knowingly<\/em> champion child murder.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one thing to wrongly-yet-honestly believe that abortion is solely a question of women \u201cchoosing their own way\u201d (Saraiya\u2019s closing observation) because you <a href=\"\/news\/bill-nye-returns-unscientifically-deceive-america-abortion\/\">aren&#8217;t accurately informed about what preborn babies are<\/a>. It\u2019s quite another to champion abortion while joking about suctioning innocent, helpless children into oblivion. The former may be a na\u00efve but good person; the latter is a sociopath.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s revisit the monologue that plays over the abortion scene (from Olivia\u2019s father):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Family is a burden\u2026 a pressure point, soft tissue, an illness, an antidote to greatness. You think you\u2019re better off with people who rely on you, depend on you, but you\u2019re wrong, because you will inevitably end up needing them, which makes you weak, pliable. Family doesn\u2019t complete you. It destroys you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The normalization of abortion made this episode shameful. The pro-Planned Parenthood filibuster scene made it dishonest. But this makes it simply bizarre.<\/p>\n<p>Here you have the writers going out of their way to link having an abortion with a brutally mercenary and anti-family viewpoint, unmistakably suggesting that abortion is valuable not because it\u2019s compassionate, but because <em>all<\/em> loved ones are impediments to selfish gain.<\/p>\n<p>And this was supposed to be a pro-<em>choice<\/em> message?<\/p>\n<p>If you asked me to write a damning caricature of pro-abortion ideology, meant to make the other side look as unsympathetic as possible, I\u2019m honestly not sure I could have come up with anything better. And yet, pro-aborts wrote this, and pro-aborts including Planned Parenthood are widely cheering it as an affirmation of their values.
