Chinese officials have announced<\/a> that the country is relaxing its one-child policy to allow families to have up to two children, potentially reducing the number of abortions it will force its populace to undergo.<\/p>\n

The one-child policy was originally imposed in 1979 as a means of curbing population growth. The Chinese government has since claimed that the policy\u00a0led to the prevention of 400 million births. The latest statement from the ruling Communist Party Central Committee said they are amending the policy in order to address the aging population and “improve the balanced development of population.”<\/p>\n

China’s enforcement of the one-child cap by forced abortions has been decried as a major human rights outrage by many both within and outside of the pro-life community. Chinese citizens who defied the mandate have shared horror stories<\/a> of being threatened with massive fines, job loss, and eventually being forcibly abducted, rendered unconscious, and having the abortion done against their will.<\/p>\n

The Chinese government has responded<\/a> to such outcry in the past by promising to eventually end forced abortions, but never followed through on this promise. The International Planned Parenthood Federation’s member organization in China, the China Family Planning Association, has pledged<\/a> to “implement government population control policies.” And in 2011, Vice President Joe Biden told<\/a> a Chinese audience, “I fully understand” and “I\u2019m not second-guessing” the policy “of one child per family.”<\/p>\n

In response to China’s announcement, Reggie Littlejohn, president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers<\/a>, sent out a press release, stating:<\/p>\n

…[I]nstituting a two-child policy will not end forced abortion, gendercide or family planning regulations in China.\u00a0 Couples will still have to have a birth permit for the first and the second child, or they may be subject to forced abortion.\u00a0 The core of the One Child Policy is not whether the number of children the government allows.\u00a0 It’s the fact that the government is setting a limit on children, and enforcing this limit coercively.\u00a0 That will not change under a two-child policy.\u00a0 The One Child Policy does not need to be modified. It needs to be abolished.<\/p>\n

Women will still be forcibly aborted under a universal 2-child policy.\u00a0 We need to keep up the pressure until China abandons all coercive population control.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
