When it comes to the abortion debate, optics play a big role. Typically speaking, the more developed a\u00a0baby is, the more people find the idea of killing him or her\u00a0to be troubling. That, along with\u00a0new information about fetal pain<\/a>, is probably why there\u2019s\u00a0strong support<\/a> for banning abortions after twenty weeks.<\/p>\n

In fact, late-term abortions are so<\/em> disturbing that even some abortion supporters assume\u00a0they must already be illegal.<\/p>\n

Well,\u00a0they’re not.<\/p>\n

Federal law imposes no gestational\u00a0limits on when an abortion can take place; seven states don\u2019t impose one either. And as a report<\/a> from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute shows, aborting a\u00a0fetus\u00a0close to viability is legal in most of the country. Here\u2019s what\u00a0that looks like…<\/p>\n

Abortions done\u00a0in the second trimester\u00a0typically use a procedure called Dilation & Evacuation (D&E),\u00a0and it\u00a0involves pulling the fetus apart one piece at a time. That\u2019s not exactly a pleasant thought, but it gets worse when you consider evidence\u00a0that he or she can feel pain<\/a>.\u00a0It\u2019s true that the\u00a0child is sometimes killed first via lethal injection, but according to\u00a0 Dr. Cassing Hammond<\/a>, the objective isn’t to prevent suffering.<\/p>\n

Hammond directs the Center for Family Planning and Contraception at Northwestern University.\u00a0He spoke last year at a\u00a0National Abortion Federation meeting, an event that was secretly recorded\u00a0by the Center for Medical Progress<\/a>. Although the footage is subject to a gag order, it was recently leaked<\/a> to Got News<\/a> – presumably by a Capitol Hill staffer.<\/p>\n
