{"id":77106,"date":"2015-10-17T08:51:05","date_gmt":"2015-10-17T12:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=77106"},"modified":"2015-10-19T14:00:17","modified_gmt":"2015-10-19T18:00:17","slug":"abortion-counselor-distraught-woman-ill-give-five-minutes-decide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-counselor-distraught-woman-ill-give-five-minutes-decide\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion &#8216;counselor&#8217; to distraught woman: &#8216;I&#8217;ll give you five minutes&#8217; to decide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>An Australian woman, identified as Genevieve, went to an abortion clinic still unsure about having an abortion. \u00a0Driven to the point of desperation by her pregnancy, she nevertheless hesitated to\u00a0go through with an abortion.\u00a0Deep down, she knew that an abortion meant killing her child, and yet she felt helpless and overwhelmed with fear at the thought of having the baby.<\/p>\n<p>For hours, she lingered in front of the clinic, unsure whether to go back inside. \u00a0After hours of crying, she\u00a0did go back into the clinic.<\/p>\n<p>Genevieve describes how the abortion &#8216;counselor&#8217; then treated her&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I collapsed in sheer exhaustion. I told her that I had been outside for hours. I cried hysterically, curled over with my head in my hands on my knees. I said that \u201cI feel that I\u2019m depriving my child of life.\u201d I stopped crying in disbelief when the counselor told me that if I was going to abort that I would have to do it right now. The counselor said, \u201cLook, I\u2019ll give you five minutes to think about it when I come back, I want your answer.\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe it. Now I was going into a state of panic and shock. I could now barely speak\u2026 The counselor glared at me, sighed a deep sigh, and impatiently said, \u201cLook, they\u2019re all waiting for you, you know\u2026\u201d They seemed angry at me. They were sick of me and in the end I weakly obeyed their commands.(1)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The clinic worker pressured a \u00a0deeply troubled and ambivalent woman to have an abortion she didn&#8217;t really want. Forced to make a life-changing decision immediately and pressured by an annoyed clinic staff, she gave in and had the abortion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68636 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b.jpg\" alt=\"DefundAd-400b\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t take a rocket scientist to realize Genevieve\u00a0would have a terrible time coping after her abortion. The clinic staff showed complete indifference to her well-being. Perhaps they saw her as just another dollar sign. Perhaps they were angry at her because she pricked their consciences by talking about how\u00a0abortion would kill her baby. Or maybe they were just frustrated because she was slowing down the clinic&#8217;s work for the day. Regardless of the reason, their behavior toward her was appalling.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-choice activists often claim that abortion clinics send ambivalent women home to think about their decision if they do not seem ready to abort. For example, the book\u00a0<em>Abortion Counseling<\/em>: <em>A Clinician\u2019s Guide to<\/em> <em>Psychology<\/em>, <em>Legislation, Politics, and Competency,\u00a0<\/em>which is intended as a guide for mental health workers whose patients are considering abortion, says the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u00a0Most abortion centers will not go ahead with the procedure until it is clear that this is the woman&#8217;s own choice, that she has not been pressured by anyone to make this decision, and that she has some emotional support afterward.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And yet women talk about <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/clinic-workers-tried-to-coerce-teen-into-having-late-term-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\">being pressured by clinic workers<\/a> all the time. In <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/abortion-counseling-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">one survey of post-abortive women who experienced trama,<\/a>\u00a083% said it was very likely that they would\u2019ve chosen differently if they had not been so strongly encouraged to abort by others, including their abortion counselors.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the saddest thing about this story is that if sidewalk counselors had been in front of the clinic that day, the abortion might never have happened. This is why it&#8217;s so important for pro-lifers to maintain a presence\u00a0in front of these clinics. It&#8217;s true that a situation like Genevieve&#8217;s, with a woman sobbing in front of a clinic, doesn&#8217;t happen every day &#8211; but when it does, a sidewalk counselor should be there to help and direct the woman to a crisis pregnancy center where she can get real help.<\/p>\n<p>If you take anything away from this tragedy, please let it be that it is so important for pro-lifers to be there for women like Genevieve &#8211;
