{"id":77005,"date":"2015-10-14T10:33:48","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T14:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=77005"},"modified":"2015-10-14T10:33:48","modified_gmt":"2015-10-14T14:33:48","slug":"settlement-reached-case-ucsb-professor-assaulted-pro-life-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/settlement-reached-case-ucsb-professor-assaulted-pro-life-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Settlement reached in case of UCSB professor who assaulted pro-life students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The University of California-Santa Barbara and pro-life students have <a href=\"http:\/\/lldf.org\/pro-life-youth-attacked-by-professor-reach-settlement-with-university\/\">reached<\/a> a settlement in the case of a feminist studies professor who attacked them on campus.<\/p>\n<p>As Live Action News <a href=\"\/news\/university-professor-assaults-pro-life-highschool-student\/\">reported last year<\/a>, Joan and Thrin Short, the daughters of Life Legal Defense Foundation Vice President of Legal Affairs Katie Short, were handing out informational flyers during a pro-life event in one of the campus&#8217;s &#8220;free speech zones&#8221; when Professor Mireille Miller-Young approached them. She began loudly berating them, grabbed Thrin&#8217;s sign, and repeatedly pushed the students when they attempted to retrieve it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In the wake of the incident, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Michael Young <a href=\"\/news\/uc-santa-barbara-vice-chancellor-blames-the-victim-for-professors-assault-on-pro-life-teen\/\">sent an email<\/a> to UCSB students implying that pro-lifers &#8220;provoked&#8221; Miller-Young by &#8220;hawking intolerance in the name of religious belief.&#8221; In July 2014, Miller-Young <a href=\"\/news\/professor-who-assaulted-pro-life-teen-pleads-guilty\/\">pled no contest<\/a> to misdemeanor grand theft, vandalism, and battery.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Life Legal Defense Foundation notes that &#8220;the University never disciplined Prof. Miller-Young for her misconduct. Neither the University nor the faculty even initiated an investigation that could have resulted in discipline,&#8221; and filed suit against UCSB for &#8220;demonstrat[ing] that it has no problem, in principle, with a professor who commits crimes like this on campus, as long as it\u2019s done for the \u2018right\u2019 reason.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but the plaintiffs are &#8220;very satisfied.&#8221; Katie Short expressed hope that it will &#8220;serve as a warning to pro-abortion faculty and staff at campuses around the country who might be tempted to interfere with the exercise of free speech by groups with whom they disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of California-Santa Barbara and pro-life students have reached a settlement in the case of a feminist studies professor who attacked them on campus.
