{"id":76787,"date":"2015-10-12T11:59:32","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T15:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=76787"},"modified":"2015-10-12T12:13:05","modified_gmt":"2015-10-12T16:13:05","slug":"california-pregnancy-centers-take-new-bully-bill-to-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-pregnancy-centers-take-new-bully-bill-to-court\/","title":{"rendered":"California pregnancy centers take new &#8220;Bully Bill&#8221; to court"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Pacific Justice Institute has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/health-and-medicine\/article38776200.html\">filed<\/a> a lawsuit on behalf of two pro-life crisis pregnancy centers to challenge California&#8217;s recently-enacted law forcing them to provide information on abortion and contraception services to patients.<\/p>\n<p>A Woman\u2019s Friend Pregnancy Resource Clinic in Marysville and Crisis Pregnancy Center of Northern California in Redding (pictured above), the CPCs represented by PJI, are licensed religious nonprofits, affiliated with area Protestant and Catholic Churches, that offer free services such as pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and medical consultations. They contend the so-called Reproductive FACT Act infringes on both their free speech and religious exercise rights under the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[AB 775] unconstitutionally compels (the clinics) to speak messages that they have not chosen, with which they do not agree, and that distract, and detract from, the messages they have chosen to speak,\u201d the lawsuit argues. \u201cDisseminating the mandated state message, which is inconsistent with plaintiffs\u2019 religious convictions, burdens these clinics\u2019 free exercise of religion, secured under the First Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Live Action News <a href=\"\/news\/new-california-law-forces-pro-life-pregnancy-centers-to-promote-abortion\/\">reported<\/a> last week, AB 775 is known as &#8220;the Bully Bill&#8221; among pro-lifers. Pro-life Assemblyman James Gallagher challenged its proponents, &#8220;Why doesn&#8217;t your notice say &#8216;adoption&#8217; in it? You\u2019re saying that these private (entities) who receive no funding\u2014no government funding whatsoever\u2014they\u2019re completely private, they have to tell about the government-funded programs that are out there, but the same is not true of the government programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NARAL Pro-Choice America has been a staunch supporter of the legislation.
