You can\u2019t always predict what\u2019s going to happen in life. Six years ago, I would have said the odds of me ever wandering the streets of South Korea in a codeine induced haze were precisely zero.<\/p>\n

I would have been wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, some things are entirely predictable; most pro-abortion arguments fall into this category.\u00a0Here’s one\u00a0you see\u00a0a lot:<\/p>\n

That was left\u00a0on a Facebook page<\/a> created by Oakland University Students for Life<\/a>, and it\u2019s the sort of thing you\u2019ve\u00a0heard plenty of times before. However, the response to it might not be.<\/p>\n

A pro-life activist answered by bringing up something called female genital mutilation<\/a> (FGM). Found in\u00a0some regions\u00a0of Africa and the Middle East, FGM involves amputating part or all of a\u00a0girl’s\u00a0external genitals – often without anesthetic.\u00a0It can\u00a0lead to\u00a0serious infection and even death.<\/p>\n

And yet, the practice continues, as there are strong cultural norms in some countries favoring it. Thus, the commenter stated: “So would you support legalizing Female Genital Mutilation if doing so would make it safer for women forced to undergo it?”<\/p>\n

It was a fair reply. After all, this was exactly the “same logic” that the commenter had used to justify abortion, and the commenter’s question implicitly asked him to defend his reasoning. Apparently that was asking too much:<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a debate tip: when someone won\u2019t acknowledge the rationale they\u2019ve just put forward, it\u2019s probably because they don\u2019t want to admit where it leads. Of course,\u00a0bad rationale isn\u2019t the only problem with this pro-abortion argument – the facts don\u2019t support it either.<\/p>\n

Poland<\/a> and Ireland<\/a> (two countries that ban most abortions) enjoy some of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the world. In Chile, the maternal mortality rate\u00a0kept dropping <\/a>even after abortion was criminalized. Meanwhile, Mexican states with permissive abortion laws actually have\u00a0higher<\/em><\/a> mortality rates than those with restrictive ones. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So how safe are those \u201cproper medical abortion clinics\u201d here in the U.S.?\u00a0The commenter above\u00a0could ask<\/a> Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich and Joyce Vasikonis about the one<\/span><\/u><\/a>\u00a0they worked at, although I\u2019m guessing he won\u2019t like what they have to say<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of the Planned Parenthood whistleblowers<\/p><\/div>\n

Mitchell-Werbrich and Vasikonis are two nurses who\u00a0were employed\u00a0at Planned Parenthood of Delaware. The\u00a0pair likened their\u00a0job environment to a \u201cmeat market,\u201d and at a 2013 state legislative hearing<\/a> they recalled women being exposed to bloody tables and unsterilized instruments. Former\u00a0clinic director Melody Meanor testified at the hearing as well, and she spoke of drugs being mishandled, records not being updated, and patients not being told of positive STD tests.<\/p>\n

Abortions were being done at Planned Parenthood of Delaware by Dr. Timothy F. Liveright, a physician who\u2019s been the subject of multiple complaints<\/a>. Granted, the complaints weren\u2019t as\u00a0bad as those leveled against Dr. Steven C. Brigham in neighboring Maryland. In 2010, a patient of his suffered serious injuries<\/a> during a botched abortion. A subsequent investigation revealed that Brigham had stored aborted fetuses in a freezer and didn\u2019t even have a license to practice medicine in the state.<\/p>\n

And of course, there was Philadelphia’s Kermit Gosnell. In addition to operating a filthy, vermin-infested clinic, he was also convicted<\/a> of killing one patient and multiple newborns.<\/p>\n

These cases aren\u2019t the only examples<\/a> of substandard abortion facilites, and it\u2019s not just pro-lifers who are talking about them. In August, the Center for Medical Progress<\/a> produced undercover footage of Cate Dyer, CEO of StemExpress.<\/p>\n

StemExpress is a company supplying baby body parts to researchers, something that they procure from abortion clinics. And as Dyer admits<\/a>, the condition of those clinics isn’t always up to par:<\/p>\n

SE:<\/b> We\u2019ll do testing on our side, so we\u2019ll be able to see, you know. And sometimes we\u2019ll find that it can be clinic-specific. I\u2019ve seen really rampant, rampant problems with bacteria in certain clinics. [laughter] Some where you\u2019re kind of in question of should they really, you know, [laughing]<\/p>\n

Buyer:<\/b> Right.<\/p>\n

SE:<\/b> I\u2019ve seen staph come out of clinics.<\/p>\n

Buyer:<\/b> Wow.<\/p>\n

SE:<\/b> So, I mean, I\u2019ve seen all sorts of things come out of clinics, so.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Far from shutting down abortionists \u201cwho could be dangerous to the procedure,\u201d\u00a0the current\u00a0policy is often to let them operate unhindered. According to the Gosnell grand jury report<\/a>, nail salons in Pennsylvania were receiving more oversight than abortion clinics got.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0while pro-lifers want to protect women, pro-abortion groups like NARAL Pro-Choice America aren\u2019t making it easy. That\u2019s who\u2019s fighting<\/a> common sense measures like surprise clinic inspections<\/u><\/a>–something that\u00a0might have\u00a0shut down Kermit Gosnell years ago. It’s also something that catches <\/a>Planned Parenthood clinics breaking the law. Naturally, they oppose<\/a> the measures, too.<\/p>\n

You can support the effort by contacting your elected officials and making it clear you want substandard abortion mills<\/a> to close. Because despite what some might think,\u00a0“legal” doesn’t\u00a0equal\u00a0“safe.”<\/p>\n
