Unfortunately, this week he <a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/videos\/bill-nye-on-abortion-and-womens-rights\">came out with<\/a> a new video at Big Think imploring, \u201cCan we stop telling women what to do with their bodies\u201d? And once again he\u2019s so scandalously wrong on basic human biology that it\u2019ll have you doubting everything you ever learned on his show:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4IPrw0NYkMg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Many, many, many, many more hundreds of eggs are fertilized than become humans. Eggs get fertilized and by that I mean sperm get accepted by ova a lot. But that\u2019s not all you need. You have to attach to the uterine wall, the inside of a womb, a woman\u2019s womb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It may be what you need <em>for a birth<\/em>, but once that egg is fertilized, that human already exists. How can a Science Guy say otherwise with a straight face? Has Nye never read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2015\/01\/08\/41-quotes-from-medical-textbooks-prove-human-life-begins-at-conception\/\">any relevant textbook on the subject<\/a> that would explain so? Does he dispute the definition of an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/organism\">organism<\/a>\u00a0as \u201ca living being,\u201d an \u201cindividual constituted to carry on the activities of life by means of organs separate in function but mutually dependent,\u201d or that a \u201chuman\u201d is simply an organism belonging to the human species? Is he unfamiliar with the <a href=\"\/news\/the-science-of-abortion-when-does-life-begin\/\">commonly accepted criteria for life<\/a> of growth, reproduction, metabolism, and response to stimuli?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But if you\u2019re going to hold that as a standard, that is to say if you\u2019re going to say when an egg is fertilized it therefore has the same rights as an individual, then whom are you going to sue? Whom are you going to imprison? Every woman who\u2019s had a fertilized egg pass through her? Every guy who\u2019s sperm has fertilized an egg and then it didn\u2019t become a human?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This would be a clever point if society was plagued with an epidemic of naturally-occurring deaths (for instance, of the sick or elderly) being prosecuted as homicides. But it turns out that somehow, we\u2019re generally competent enough to figure out which is which.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodexposed.com\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-68636 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b.jpg\" alt=\"DefundAd-400b\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b.jpg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DefundAd-400b-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the period of our history <a href=\"\/news\/columbia-prof-tries-fails-find-real-constitutional-right-abortion\/\">when abortion was generally illegal after quickening<\/a>, the authorities didn\u2019t attempt to investigate or prosecute abortions they didn\u2019t clearly know happened; they used common sense consistent with the scientific knowledge of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we know better, there\u2019s no reason to believe that criminalizing abortion would have any different standards of probable cause than any other murders, just as the police don\u2019t preemptively install security cameras in the homes of every family that has a grandparent living with them.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It\u2019s just a reflection of a deep scientific lack of understanding and you literally or apparently literally don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The most blatant case of projection we\u2019ve seen all year? The competition is fierce, but it\u2019s a strong contender.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And so when it comes to women\u2019s right with respect to their reproduction, I think you should leave it to women. This is really \u2013 you cannot help but notice. I\u2019m not the first guy to observe this, you have a lot of men of European descent passing these extraordinary laws based on ignorance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how anyone being of European descent is germane to the merits of anyone\u2019s position on abortion, but I do know that Nye apparently not knowing that\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/pro-aborts-love-women-so-much-they-pretend-not-to-see-them-when-theyre-pro-life\/\">women lead the pro-life movement<\/a> is more ignorant than anything he\u2019s identified so far.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I know it was written or your interpretation of a book written 5,000 years ago, 50 centuries ago, makes you think that when a man and a woman have sexual intercourse they always have a baby.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s one thing for somebody to live such a politically sheltered life that he isn\u2019t aware of groups like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secularprolife.org\/\">Secular Pro-Life<\/a>, but does anyone think it\u2019s plausible that Nye sincerely doesn\u2019t know that millions of people\u2019s motivation for opposing the violence of abortion is no more Bible-based than their opposition to war or child abuse or capital punishment?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I mean it\u2019s hard not to get frustrated with this everybody.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Especially when your entire view of the subject is about as sophisticated and informed as a teenager who just found a stack of NARAL pamphlets.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And I know nobody likes abortion, okay.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Why? If opposition to it is based on a certain interpretation of a 5,000-year-old book, then what reason would non-Christians have for disliking abortion? What\u2019s wrong with liking it? (To say nothing of the fact that anyone who really thinks \u201cnobody likes abortion\u201d clearly hasn\u2019t heard of <a href=\"\/news\/katha-pollitt-glamourizing-abortion-wont-redeem-your-mothers-suffering\/\">Katha Pollitt or her fans<\/a>\u2026)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But you can\u2019t tell somebody what to do. I mean she has rights over this, especially if she doesn\u2019t like the guy that got her pregnant. She doesn\u2019t want anything to do with your genes, get over it, especially if she were raped and all this. So it\u2019s very frustrating on the outside, on the other side.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, whether \u201cshe has rights over this\u201d would depend in large part on what the \u201cthis\u201d in question is, no? If Nye can\u2019t get the factual basics of the premise right, he\u2019s in no position to draw conclusions about it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We have so many more problems to squander resources on this argument based on bad science, on just lack of understanding. It\u2019s very frustrating. You wouldn\u2019t know how big a human egg was if it weren\u2019t for microscopes, if it weren\u2019t for scientists, medical researchers looking diligently. You wouldn\u2019t know the process. You wouldn\u2019t have that shot, the famous shot or shots where the sperm are bumping up against the egg.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a complete non-sequitur, a man who bastardizes science to reflect his biases ranting about the imaginary know-nothingism of people who actually respect science more than he does (unless, of course, Nye has actually uncovered a secret pro-life plot against America\u2019s microscopes, in which case Big Think kind of buried the lead).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So then to claim that you know the next step when you obviously don\u2019t is trouble. Let me do that again. Let me just pull back. At some point we have to respect the facts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The lack of self-awareness almost physically hurts.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Recommending or insisting on abstinence has been completely ineffective. Just being objective here.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As Live Action regulars know, there is a <a href=\"\/news\/abstinence-hating-bloggers-double-down-on-exploiting-elizabeth-smart\/\">wealth of research<\/a> that has shown precisely the opposite. Does the name Science Guy really still apply if you don\u2019t study up on what you\u2019re talking about?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Closing abortion clinics. Closing, not giving women access to birth control has not been an effective way to lead to healthier societies. I mean I think we all know that.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like Nye also didn\u2019t bother to look up <a href=\"\/news\/top-legal-group-releases-videos-exposing-planned-parenthoods-deception\/\">how many non-Planned Parenthood women&#8217;s health centers<\/a> are out there, either, or the <a href=\"\/news\/debunking-the-atlantics-flawed-case-for-school-contraception-distribution\/\">actual data on contraception&#8217;s relationship to abortion and birth rates<\/a>. Inquiring minds also want to know if Nye\u2019s definition of health includes the <a href=\"https:\/\/liveaction.org\/projects\/\">myriad ways Planned Parenthood mistreats women<\/a>. And regardless of health, closing abortion clinics certainly leads to more just and humane societies.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And I understand that you have deeply held beliefs and it really is ultimately out of respect for people, in this case your perception of unborn people. I understand that.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But you don\u2019t respect them enough to engage with their actual views or the true facts behind them.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But I really encourage you to look at the facts. And I know people are now critical of the expression fact based but what\u2019s wrong with that? So I just really encourage you to not tell women what to do and not pursue these laws that really are in nobody\u2019s best interest. Just really be objective about this. We have other problems to solve everybody. Come on. Come on. Let\u2019s work together.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nothing like a dash of utterly-unearned arrogance and condescension to top off this symphony of ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>The most charitable interpretation of Bill Nye is that he has absolutely no idea what he\u2019s talking about, but that didn\u2019t stop <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/2015\/09\/24\/success-naral-presents-bill-nye-on-outdated-beliefs-that-predate-smart-science-shape-abortion-law\/\">NARAL<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/bill-nye-made-a-video-about-abortion_5603fe67e4b0fde8b0d165a8\">Huffington Post<\/a> from promoting him. It\u2019s plausible Nye doesn\u2019t know that prominent pro-abortion thinkers and leader such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abort73.com\/abortion\/medical_testimony\/\">Faye Wattleton, Ann Furedi, Naomi Wolf, David Boonin, Peter Singer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/clinicquotes.com\/we-have-dealt-in-euphemism\/\">Judith Arcana<\/a>, <a href=\"\/news\/some-pro-choice-activists-admit-abortion-kills-life-i-knew-it-was-a-baby\/\">Kathleen McDonnell, Leslie Cannold, Penny Lane, Jennifer Baumgardner, Loretta Ross<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/news\/a-life-worth-sacrificing-salon-blogger-admits-abortion-ends-life\/\">Mary Elizabeth Williams<\/a> have all admitted they know better\u2014but NARAL and HuffPo have no such plausible deniability.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re just thrilled to have someone with so many years as a trusted cultural icon spouting their lies, with so much goodwill built up that many simply can\u2019t imagine the Science Guy leading them astray.
