In a blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gungormusic.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/lucette\">post<\/a> before she was born he wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Life is more than salary levels or grade point averages. \u00a0Life is more than rankings on a chart. \u00a0Life is about things like love, wonder and joy. \u00a0And let me tell you, this girl is going to be loved. And while I don\u2019t know that much about Down Syndrome (DS) yet, the people with DS that I have seen certainly seem to know how to experience some very real joy and wonder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Life is a gift. \u00a0Lucy is a gift.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In Lucy&#8217;s\u00a0honor, whose name means &#8220;light,&#8221; Michael and Lisa\u00a0wrote a song\u00a0titled &#8220;Light&#8221;:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A_uioQqW8ac?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some of the powerful lyrics are :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And the blind gained sight<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As we met our light<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Oh the joy and fight<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The gift of life<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lucette was born in\u00a02014. That\u00a0 was the same year a woman tweeted atheist writer Richard Dawkins saying she would be faced with an ethical dilemma if becoming pregnant with a child with Down syndrome. Dawkins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2014\/aug\/21\/richard-dawkins-immoral-not-to-abort-a-downs-syndrome-foetus\">replied<\/a> to her tweet, suggesting if she did become pregnant she should just \u201cabort it and try again.&#8221;\u00a0He stated it would be immoral to bring a child into the world with Down syndrome if you had the choice not to.<\/p>\n<p>Families of\u00a0children with Down\u00a0syndrome\u00a0were outraged. They responded to his statements by tweeting pictures of their\u00a0beautiful and happy kids.\u00a0Dawkins tweeted that the majority of preborn children with Down syndrome in the U.S and Europe are aborted so therefore what he said wasn\u2019t outlandish but the norm. Later he issued an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2014\/08\/27\/why-is-richard-dawkins-in-favor-of-abortion-when-a-baby-has-down-syndrome\/\">apology<\/a> for the blunt way he expressed his belief, though his belief on the matter\u00a0hasn\u2019t changed.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully Michael and Lisa Gungor had a very different opinion about their little girl, who, along with\u00a0Down syndrome, has\u00a0two heart conditions.\u00a0The Gungors believe people with special needs make the world a more beautiful place. Their daughter has taught them how every life matters.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that\u00a0their love for Lucette was an eye-opening, life-changing experience for them. In his blog\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gungormusic.com\/blog\/2014\/05\/lucette\">post,\u00a0<\/a>Michael shares the initial fears they had when they found out that Lucette had\u00a0Down syndrome.\u00a0He\u00a0said it felt like the world was spinning. He called his sister and she affirmed that their baby was precious, loved and fearfully made. This reality is what is expressed through the lyrics of the song.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Your hands, the creases<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Your feet, you\u2019re breathing<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You\u2019re mine, you\u2019re perfect light<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He writes that when they learned their little girl had Down syndrome, Michael placed his hand on Lisa&#8217;s belly and read Psalm 139 over their child. He said the phrase, &#8220;You created her inmost being&#8221; unearthed a reservoir of tears for the both of them.<\/p>\n<p>This message is needed in a world that is often hostile to\u00a0people with special needs. Children and adults with Down syndrome can suffer ridicule and shame for looking and behaving differently than others. Yet Gungor sings\u00a0over his daughter that she is a perfect light: &#8220;I\u00a0can\u2019t take my eyes off of you my Light;\u00a0I can\u2019t take my eyes off of you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I hope many parents contemplating aborting a child with\u00a0special needs will listen to this song and\u00a0watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=A_uioQqW8ac\">video,<\/a>\u00a0which contains\u00a0personal footage of Lucette&#8217;s birth as well as her first birthday party.
