{"id":73363,"date":"2015-09-08T11:11:48","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T15:11:48","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=73363"},"modified":"2015-09-08T13:55:37","modified_gmt":"2015-09-08T17:55:37","slug":"pew-releases-mixed-numbers-us-catholics-abortion-beliefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pew-releases-mixed-numbers-us-catholics-abortion-beliefs\/","title":{"rendered":"Pew releases mixed numbers on US Catholics&#8217; abortion beliefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Pew Research Center has released its latest survey on the moral and religious beliefs of American Catholics, which contains a number of eye-opening findings about\u00a0how fully the faith&#8217;s teachings on abortion are adopted by its members.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Fifty-seven\u00a0percent of Catholics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2015\/09\/02\/chapter-4-expectations-of-the-church\/\">call<\/a> abortion &#8220;sinful,&#8221; a number that rises to 73 percent of those who attend Mass weekly. At 60 percent, Protestants are slightly more likely to call abortion sinful. However, only 17 percent of Catholics believe it is sinful to use contraceptives (and only 31 percent of weekly Mass attendees).\u00a0These views do not differ substantially between young and old Catholics.<\/p>\n<p>Only a third of Catholics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2015\/09\/02\/chapter-1-exploring-catholic-identity\/\">say<\/a> that &#8220;opposing abortion&#8221; is &#8220;essential&#8221; to their Catholic identity, with just 30 percent of Catholic Democrats and independents, and less than half (42 percent) of Catholic Republicans, calling it essential.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-six percent of Catholics also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2015\/09\/02\/chapter-4-expectations-of-the-church\/\">believe<\/a> the Church should allow its members to use birth control, including 65 percent who attend Mass weekly.<\/p>\n<p>As Live Action News <a href=\"\/news\/faith-forceps-how-churches-are-promoting-abortion\/\">has<\/a> <a href=\"\/news\/american-catholics-choose-death\/\">covered<\/a> over the years, it is an ongoing controversy within the pro-life movement whether Christian churches in the United States are adequately instilling their membership with strong beliefs in the sanctity of life.\u00a0The Catholic Church has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/beliefs-and-teachings\/what-we-believe\/catechism\/catechism-of-the-catholic-church\/epub\/index.cfm\">taught<\/a> that abortion is a grave &#8220;moral evil&#8221; meriting excommunication since the beginning of its two-millennia history.
