Planned Parenthood is America\u2019s largest abortion chain, performing over three hundred thousand<\/a> of them every year. Recently, it\u00a0took on a new task: giving advice to pro-life Republicans.<\/p>\n

Beginning in July, the Center for Medical Progress<\/a> (CMP) began releasing a series of undercover videos. Shot with hidden cameras, they show Planned Parenthood officials admitting to multiple crimes, including the sale<\/a> of fetal body parts, performing partial-birth abortions<\/a>, and illegally altering<\/a> abortion techniques in order to\u00a0harvest organs.\u00a0CMP also uncovered evidence that Planned Parenthood is committing infanticide.<\/p>\n

In response, the House Judiciary Committee has announced that it\u2019s about to hold hearings<\/a> on Planned Parenthood\u2019s activities. Two other committees<\/a> are conducting investigations of their own. While public records show that\u00a0Planned Parenthood\u00a0generally helps <\/a>Democratic candidates, it recently decided to bless Republican committee members with some free advice.<\/p>\n

Last week, Planned Parenthood Action Fund\u2019s executive vice president, Dawn Laguens, dismissed<\/a> CMP\u2019s videos\u00a0as being the result of \u201ca relentless campaign\u201d aiming to \u201cblock millions from accessing basic reproductive health care.\u201d She went on to warn legislators\u00a0“that any politician who throws their hat in with these extremists does so at their own risk \u2014 it leaves their constituents devastated, turns off voters, and frankly, loses elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laguens is very kind to show this sort of concern, but she should probably review\u00a0some facts before offering counsel. The first is that what\u2019s on the video footage isn\u2019t the result of any “campaign”; it\u2019s the result of Planned Parenthood officials being willing to break the law. A lot.<\/p>\n

The second is that far from blocking access to health care, pro-lifers are fighting to expand it. Last month\u2019s Senate bill to defund Planned Parenthood would have redirected it\u2019s half\u00a0billion<\/a> dollar subsidy to community health centers<\/a>, places where people of limited means can find the care they need. Further,\u00a0community health centers offer services at far more locations<\/a> than Planned Parenthood provides.<\/p>\n

Finally, hearing a lab assistant cheerfully note how there\u2019s \u201canother boy<\/a>\u201d lying dead on a countertop is more the sort of thing that turns off voters, especially when they learn that their tax dollars helped put him there.<\/p>\n

Contrary to what Dawn Laguens says, investigating Planned Parenthood is a great move. Defunding it would be another one,\u00a0which is why Live Action has a\u00a0petition<\/a> asking Congress to do so.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood should really\u00a0stop worrying about pro-life lawmakers and focus on their own problems.
