The women who seek help at these organizations are often in desperate need of support as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Such was the case at A Woman\u2019s Friend Pregnancy Resource Clinic in Marysville, Calif., when a client named Hillary walked through their doors in March of 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Addicted to heroin and homeless, Hillary found herself pregnant. Hillary felt she was beyond all hope of caring for her child. Feeling that abortion was her only option, Hillary made her visit to A Woman\u2019s Friend\u00a0to confirm her pregnancy with a free ultrasound, and to get help accessing state-run Medi-Cal health benefits to pay for the abortion at a local Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27251\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27251\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/3d-ultrasound-fetus-baby2.jpg\" alt=\"3d ultraounds\" width=\"360\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/3d-ultrasound-fetus-baby2.jpg 360w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/3d-ultrasound-fetus-baby2-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">3d ultraounds<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">As it turned out, Hillary would end up receiving far more help than she could have imagined, walking through the doors that have been open to women since 1987, and is one of over 1,000 U.S. pregnancy help organizations offering free ultrasounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">\u201cThey were actually all filled up for ultrasounds that day,\u201d Hillary said, recalling her consultation, \u201cBut I think that [the client advocate] knew that I needed that ultrasound. They got me in that day, a couple of hours later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">During that first session, Carol Lawson, Hillary\u2019s client advocate at A Woman\u2019s Friend scheduled her\u00a0for\u00a0a free ultrasound, and continued to offer support, minister to, and pray with Hillary\u2014despite her skepticism that she would be able to change enough to take care of a child.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/widget2.php?movie=1&amp;size=400&amp;nobuy=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"484\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/widget2.php?movie=1&amp;size=400&amp;nobuy=1\">Play Movie<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">\u201cI remember telling my client advocate, \u2018I can\u2019t imagine how I\u2019m going to stop using heroin for my baby. I can\u2019t even do it for myself, \u201d Hillary said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Seeing her child on the ultrasound screen, and gaining a better understanding of the growing life she was carrying during her initial visit, Hillary had been even more impressed with the genuine compassion the staff showed to her at the appointment.<\/p>\n<p>While she had expected the staff at the faith-based pregnancy help center to judge her, or try to aggressively evangelize her, the caring tone and follow-up care she received left a lasting impression. Taking advantage of the center\u2019s parenting programs and material resources such as diapers and baby clothes, Hillary has found a long-term network of support in a place she least expected it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Even now, the local pro-life community continues to extend help to Hillary and her 9-month-old son, Adam. In July, St. Isidore Catholic Church in Yuba City\u2014just across the river from Marysville\u2014held a surprise baby shower for her, giving her diapers, clothes and other essentials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">[easy-tweet tweet=&#8221;Seeing her baby on an ultrasound screen made a huge difference for Hillary.&#8221; user=&#8221;LiveActionNews&#8221; hashtags=&#8221;#IChoseLife&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Thanks to her interaction with what she calls the \u201cChrist-like\u201d staff at A Woman\u2019s Friend, Hillary has now been drug-free for 17 months, has become part of a local church, and she and her son are living with her mother. The new mom also has plans to start school in the fall to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\">Following her experience with the center, which serves over 1,600 clients each year, Hillary also referred another young woman in a nearly identical situation to A Woman\u2019s Friend.
