Just information: no regulations, no restrictions, no penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the significance of hearing an unborn baby\u2019s heartbeat makes it obvious why the \u201cchoice\u201d movement can\u2019t just stand by idly as these laws sweep the nation, but it\u2019s still hard to fathom how they can rationalize opposition. At women\u2019s health &amp; lifestyle website Blisstree, Elizabeth Nolan Brown <a href=\"http:\/\/blisstree.com\/live\/why-i-think-fetal-heartbeat-bills-are-wrong-142\/\">gives it a try<\/a>:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>At a time when there\u2019s so much focus on cutting back on medical costs and unnecessary health care, mandating a procedure that serves no medical purpose seems absurd.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, hearing a fetal heartbeat does have medical purposes. First, if heeded, it can spare women the <a href=\"http:\/\/afterabortion.org\/\">psychological trauma<\/a> of abortion. Second, it provides an obvious medical benefit to the baby by making him or her less likely to be killed by a mother who\u2019s just been convinced or reminded of her child\u2019s humanity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>And the bill doesn\u2019t merely propose that a medically unnecessary procedure take place\u2014it also mandates how doctors must talk about it. It places government\u00a0bureaucrats\u00a0in the role of physicians, substituting ideology for science or medical knowledge.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Considering that Ms. Brown doesn\u2019t bother to give any examples of the unscientific propaganda doctors will supposedly be forced to regurgitate, it seems safe to assume that she\u2019s just upset about making abortionists <a href=\"http:\/\/rightcal.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/indisputable-fact-life-begins-at.html\">accurately describe what they&#8217;re destroying<\/a>. Indeed, Ms. Brown neglects to mention the reason why abortion \u201cphysicians\u201d can\u2019t be trusted to inform their patients: because <em>they\u2019re<\/em> the ones <a href=\"..\/..\/rosaacuna\">who\u2019ve been repeatedly caught<\/a> \u201csubstituting ideology for science or medical knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Forcing women seeking abortions to undergo ultrasounds isn\u2019t just unnecessary, it\u2019s also unfair. It requires a pregnant woman who has already decided that carrying a fetus to term is not the right decision at that time to endure one more time-consuming, uncomfortable hurdle to obtaining a safe, legal surgery.\u00a0Maybe for some women, this is simply a hassle. But for women who may feel more conflicted about their decision to abort, the process is cruel and manipulative.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s only \u201cunfair\u201d if the information is irrelevant to the procedure they\u2019re considering, which clearly isn\u2019t the case. It\u2019s only \u201ccruel and manipulative\u201d if the information is false or misleading, which it isn\u2019t\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ehd.org\/prenatal-images-index.php\">pictures<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ptzW1VweyKM\">recordings<\/a> don\u2019t lie. Sure, it can be \u201cuncomfortable\u201d to see the undeniable humanity of what you\u2019re about to dispose of, but <em>that\u2019s the point<\/em>: revealing that the \u201cchoice\u201d to abort is <em>far<\/em> more consequential than the pro-choicers would have you believe. A little discomfort before aborting is far preferable to the emotional devastation of realizing you were responsible for extinguishing an innocent life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The whole heartbeat bill idea seems to be predicated on the assumption that women seeking abortions somehow don\u2019t realize that there\u2019s a fetus growing inside of them. But anyone who\u2019s ever been pregnant knows how quickly the body begins changing when you\u2019re with child. Pregnancy is not subtle. And all women who have abortions are not so idiotic or delusional as to be unable to comprehend what\u2019s happening inside their bodies.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, comprehending that there\u2019s <em>something<\/em> growing inside your body doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you know that something\u2019s precise nature\u2014the abortion lobby\u2019s years of propaganda have seen to that. Second, it doesn\u2019t exactly help Ms. Brown\u2019s case to concede that many women know better yet have their babies killed anyway. Third, we don\u2019t make laws for the majority who would never break them, but for the minority who would. Do speed limits imply that we\u2019re all reckless drivers?<\/p>\n<p>The central failing of arguments like Elizabeth Nolan Brown\u2019s is also the key reason why heartbeat requirements are necessary: nowhere does she give a moment\u2019s consideration to the baby. In both her column and in clinics across the country, the little patient is treated like he or she doesn\u2019t exist.
