An Ipsos poll<\/a> conducted for Reuters from August 13-18, 2015, found that the American public is strongly reacting against Planned Parenthood after viewing the investigative videos <\/a>from the Center for Medical Progress. But you’d never know that, thanks to the way the media is distorting the findings.<\/p>\n

Instead of talking about the important numbers \u2013 the reactions of those who have seen the incriminating videos \u2013 the media highlights public support for free cancer screenings, and suggests over and over again\u00a0that Republicans tread lightly in regards to Planned Parenthood – all while 44% of those who had seen the videos said their views towards PP were more negative as a result\u00a0and 31% said seeing the videos made them even more opposed to abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some more numbers: Only 19% claimed their views on PP were more positive after viewing the videos. Only 16% said they were more in favor of abortion. And when pollsters told respondents about the allegations of baby body parts sales by Planned Parenthood, 39% of those polled\u00a0declared support for total defunding of Planned Parenthood, while 34% opposed defunding. 43% also agreed with critics that PP is acting inappropriately in regards to the sale of human tissue, while 33% agreed with PP that their behavior is appropriate. This, despite the fact that the question took a jab at Republicans:<\/span><\/p>\n

As you may have heard, an anti-abortion group recently released videos reportedly showing Planned Parenthood staff saying they sell tissue from aborted fetuses. Due to these allegations, Republicans in Congress are attempting to take away all federal funding for Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n

In light of this, do you support or opposed the defunding of Planned Parenthood?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Again, the media ignore this. In a Reuters article<\/a> discussing the results of the poll, Emily Stephenson declares:<\/p>\n

\n

Americans broadly support providing federal funding for free women’s health exams, screenings and contraception services, a Reuters\/Ipsos poll has found, suggesting risks for Republicans criticizing Planned Parenthood as part of the 2016 campaigns\u2026 the strong support for federal funds to help Planned Parenthood provide pregnancy tests and other services indicates Republican presidential candidates should tread carefully… The Reuters\/Ipsos poll shows they [Republicans] should be cautious on women’s health issues.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Later in the article, Stephenson emphasizes the few statistics that, at first glance, seem to show overwhelming support for Planned Parenthood:<\/p>\n

Seventy-three percent of respondents said they supported federal funding for an unnamed group to provide women’s health exams, 69 percent backed federal dollars for prenatal services, and 59 percent were in favor of it for contraception. Both Democrats and Republicans polled supported federal funding for the services\u2026<\/p>\n

Overall, 54 percent supported federal funding of Planned Parenthood, and 26 percent opposed it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The problem with these statistics –\u00a0as they are described in the Reuters article –\u00a0is that they are misleading. Of course a question such as, \u201cDo you support or oppose the federal government funding of Planned Parenthood?\u201d will gain a lot of positive responses – especially when it follows questions regarding cancer screenings, women’s health exams, health counseling, etc.\u00a0Many have been misled in their views of what PP actually does. For example, many believe the common – and completely false\u00a0– claim that abortions make up only 3\u00a0percent\u00a0of PP’s budget.\u00a0Read more about that here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The real truth of the poll is found in\u00a0the responses of those\u00a0who had seen the videos from the Center for Medical progress. Surprisingly, 63% of respondents had not seen the videos<\/em> \u2013 meaning a\u00a0generally positive response to Planned Parenthood\u00a0is actually completely unsurprising. When the poll moves on to those who had seen the videos, the responses become decidedly more negative, as described above.<\/p>\n

Like Stephenson, Ipsos Public Affairs pollster Chris Jackson also seemingly ignored <\/a>the overall results of the poll, claiming that the Center for Medical Progress\u00a0is \u201cgetting a small population really fired up but isn\u2019t really changing things on a national scale.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 44% who indicated their views on PP are more negative after viewing the CMP’s videos can hardly be described as “a small population” – at least not if Reuters and Ipsos intend to present this poll as accurate and\u00a0indicative of the feelings of the overall American public. The truth is, Planned Parenthood should be worried about these poll numbers. Claims of “deceptive editing” fall flat when people view the full videos released by The Center for Medical Progress, and nearly half of those who see them – as we can see from these poll results – react with\u00a0disgust at Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n

Of course, Americans broadly support providing federal funding for women\u2019s health exams. Of course, most Americans support funding for cancer screenings. That\u2019s not the real issue here, and that\u2019s not the part of the poll results that matters.<\/p>\n

What matters is that a significant\u00a0percentage of the American\u00a0public is growing more and more disturbed by the unethical and illegal practices of Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n
