No discussion about the abortion industry at its worst would be complete without hearing from Wendy Davis, the failed candidate for Governor of Texas<\/a> who rose to fame by filibustering on behalf of the “right” to execute five-month-old preborn babies.<\/p>\n

Apparently all this talk of the sick, sick things<\/a> Planned Parenthood has been doing<\/a> to poor children<\/a> just as developed<\/a> as her victims has gotten her nostalgic for her glory days, so she’s penned an op-ed<\/a> in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram…<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Planned Parenthood was a lifeline for me many years ago when I was an uninsured teenaged mother struggling financially.<\/p>\n

Had Planned Parenthood not been there for me, I\u2019d not have had access to basic health screenings and contraceptive care.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Really? Legitimate women’s health clinics outnumber Planned Parenthoods twentyfold nationwide<\/a>. Even assuming what you’re saying was true back then, it’s certainly not true today.<\/p>\n

\n

Even more compelling are the stories of women whose cancers would have otherwise gone undiagnosed and untreated were it not for care from Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Wrong. Planned Parenthood doesn’t provide mammograms<\/a>, just basic screenings\u2014which are also covered<\/a> by real medical centers.<\/p>\n

\n

Making Planned Parenthood the \u201cbogeyman\u201d because abortion care comprises 3 percent of its services, and attempting to defund it in order to score political points, not only represents demagoguery of the worst kind, it also threatens to endanger the health of countless women.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I guess Wendy doesn’t read the Washington Post<\/a>, which deemed the 3% figure a three-Pinocchio falsehood achieved by weighing all services without regard for time, cost, or effort put into them. And to flatly claim\u00a0–\u00a0in the wake of eight increasingly nightmarish undercover videos\u00a0–\u00a0that’s all the push is about is almost as dishonest as that time she tried to claim<\/a> 7-pound babies are never aborted.<\/p>\n

\n

The Texas Policy Evaluation Project at the University of Texas found that 55 percent of Texas women now report at least one barrier to accessing reproductive healthcare, including life-saving cancer screenings or family planning services.<\/p>\n

And, with these barriers in place, the Health and Human Services Commission estimated that an additional 23,760 babies would be born under Medicaid in 2014-15, with a projected cost of $136 million in state dollars from 2013 through 2015.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Funny how someone who\u00a0favored higher spending<\/a> as a State Senator and expanding Medicaid<\/a> as a gubernatorial candidate suddenly becomes a penny-pincher once the subject turns to the price tag of letting children live.<\/p>\n

After that string of lazily regurgitated lies and non-sequiturs, Davis makes an attempt at something resembling a fact-based argument. She quotes Texas Association of Community Health Centers executive director Jose Camacho as claiming, “We can\u2019t say in good conscience that Federally Qualified Health Centers have the capacity to take these women in.” To bolster the claim, Davis says:<\/p>\n

\n

To cite just one example, according to the Department of State Health Services, the state\u2019s budget for reproductive health and family planning for uninsured, low-income women served just 47,332 clients in 2012, a drastic 77 percent decrease from the 202,968 clients served in 2011.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But an interview<\/a> between the Daily Signal and Casey Mattox of Alliance Defending Freedom earlier this month took a closer look at the numbers and found things rather more encouraging in the Lone Star State:<\/p>\n

According to state data, in 2012, the pregnancy rate in Texas remained relatively the same, falling\u00a0from 82.2<\/a>\u00a0pregnancies per 1,000 women ages 15-44, to\u00a081.1 in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Abortions dropped during the same period, from 65,547 in 2012 compared to 61,513 in 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe data belies the claim that Planned Parenthood was necessary to women\u2019s health care in Texas,\u201d Mattox said.<\/p>\n

In 2013, right after Texas ousted the organization, Planned Parenthood clinics in the state agreed to pay\u00a0$4.3 million<\/a>\u00a0to settle a federal civil suit brought by the Justice Department under President Obama.<\/p>\n

The suit claimed the organization fraudulently billed Medicaid for women\u2019s health care services such as birth control from 2003 to 2009.<\/p>\n

The massive drop in Medicaid and contraceptive claims, Mattox said, \u201cmay be evidence that Texas cleaned up a lot of false claims.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, Mattox argued the drop in program enrollees could be attributed to a bump in the economy\u2014with more people enrolling on employer-provided health care plans\u2014and the creation of the Affordable Care Act, which \u201ccompelled free coverage of contraceptives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Besides, even if we took at face value the objection that legitimate medical clinics aren’t currently able to pick up the slack if Planned Parenthood disappeared, here’s a crazy thought: how much more could the providers who don’t kill babies do if they received the $528 million<\/a> the government is currently sending the ones who do?<\/p>\n

There’s something fitting about Wendy Davis’s total disinterest in what Planned Parenthood has actually done to incite this latest wave of opposition\u2014this was, after all, the woman who didn’t know the basic facts of her own pet issue<\/a> when seeking the governorship based on her passion for that issue.<\/p>\n

But just as cheap abortion shilling failed to give her victory then<\/a>, this op-ed will do nothing to impress anyone beyond her loyalists in the Cult of the Pink Sneakers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
