Pro-life presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson is under fire for news that he once used cells from two aborted babies in a study, LifeSiteNews reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1992, Carson co-authored a paper that says, \u201cHuman choroid plexus ependyma and nasal mucosa were obtained from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Carson maintains there is \u201cabsolutely no contradiction between the research I worked on in 1992 and my views,\u201d noting that he had no part in aborting the children, but merely \u201ckeeping a record of it.\u201d He reiterated that he opposes abortion to procure organs or tissue, but said that \u201c[w]hen pathologists receive specimen, their job is to prepare the specimen. They have no job opining on where the tissue came from.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to<\/a> Life News, Carson has also suggested that how a sample is acquired is a separate matter from what doctors should do with it after its acquisition: \u201cTo willfully ignore evidence that you have for some ideological reason is wrong [\u2026] Regardless of whether it\u2019s from a fetus or someone who\u2019s 150 years old, they bank them in tissue blocks. Other people doing comparative research need to have a basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday evening, Carson offered an expanded response<\/a> via Facebook:<\/p>\n

My only involvement in this study was supplying tumors that I had removed from my patients [\u2026] Research hospitals across the country have microscope slides of all kinds of tissue to compare and contrast. The fetal tissue that was viewed in this study by others was not collected for this study.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Abortion defenders have pounced on the story, with Vox\u2019s Sarah Kliff arguing<\/a> Carson\u2019s defense \u201cdoes not make much sense,\u201d while Slate\u2019s Amanda Marcotte claims<\/a> it proves \u201cfetal tissue donations have never really been the issue\u201d in pro-lifers\u2019 campaign against Planned Parenthood\u2019s fetal organ harvesting practices.<\/p>\n

LifeSiteNews\u2019s Ben Johnson notes that Pontifical Academy for Life concluded that the use of embryonic stem cells for medical purposes is morally wrong as a \u201cproximate material cooperation,\u201d regardless of the researchers\u2019 role in the original embryo\u2019s destruction.
