When we last checked PolitiHack’s… er…\u00a0PolitiFact’s\u00a0\u201cfact-checking\u201d on abortion, we found<\/a> they were actually\u00a0cherry-picking numbers to falsely deny that the country\u2019s opinion on abortion has been souring. Sadly, a review of their reporting on presidential candidates and abortion since then shows that facts still take a backseat to the agenda.<\/p>\n

\"rulings-tom-halftrue\"Most recently, they rated<\/a> \u201cHalf-True\u201d Marco Rubio\u2019s debate statement that \u201cThe idea that a minor\u2026 cannot get a tattoo without parental consent — but can get an abortion without parental consent — is just mind-shattering for the vast majority of Americans.\u201d After reviewing the laws of each state, they concluded Rubio only \u201chas a good argument for about 11 states\u201d (even though they come close to admitting that the judicial bypass provisions of 37 states render their parental requirements essentially meaningless).<\/p>\n

But whatever the numbers amount to is beside the point. PolitiFact\u2019s headline statement presents \u201cA minor cannot get a tattoo without parental consent but can get an abortion without parental consent\u201d as a complete statement by Rubio when in reality the words immediately preceding and following it make clear he wasn\u2019t even claiming that was the case everywhere, but only criticizing the hypocrisy of the viewpoint. That\u2019s not a half-false statement; it\u2019s a statement with zero<\/em> falsehood.<\/p>\n

\"rulings-tom-mostlyfalse\"Earlier, they called<\/a> Rubio\u2019s claim to have \u201cnever said that or advocated that\u201d abortion laws make exceptions for rape or incest \u201cMostly False\u201d because he\u2019s supported bills with such exceptions before. As the senator himself explained<\/a>, that\u2019s nonsense because supporting a bill that only gets you part of what you want isn\u2019t the same as actively opposing the rest of what you want. PolitiFact includes Rubio\u2019s explanation and admits that \u201cwe could find no evidence that Rubio has generally favored those types of exceptions, and we couldn\u2019t find him specifically advocating for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a sane world, this would be enough for a \u201cTrue\u201d rating, or at least \u201cMostly True.\u201d But when your job is fact-wrecking<\/em> rather than fact-checking, it adds up to \u201cMostly False\u201d because \u201cRubio\u2019s claim has an element of truth, but it leaves out important details.\u201d The most charitable possible response to this is that they\u2019re being petty about the semantic differences between \u201cadvocate\u201d and \u201caccept,\u201d and that whether one amounts to\u00a0the other is a value judgment beyond the scope of empirically-based fact-checking. Feel charitable toward PolitiFact\u2019s motives? Given their track record on the subject<\/a>, me neither.<\/p>\n

\"HillaryOn August 7, they looked at<\/a> Hillary Clinton\u2019s claim that Scott Walker \u201cleft women across the state stranded with nowhere else to turn\u201d for medical care by defunding Planned Parenthood. PolitiFact noted that the reductions in PP\u2019s state funding led to the closure of several locations, but admitted that the Wisconsin budget still allocated the money for use by other providers. (They missed, however, alternate providers of low-income care<\/a> in the communities where Planned Parenthoods closed, like my hometown of Fond du Lac.)<\/p>\n

And yet, Clinton\u2019s attack gets a \u201cHalf True\u201d because Walker supposedly reduced women\u2019s options, but she \u201cgoes too far\u201d in saying Wisconsin women have \u201cnowhere\u201d to seek care. This is one of the more insidious ways PolitiFact\u2019s bias sneaks in even while they\u2019re ostensibly criticizing a Democrat. They marked down Rubio\u2019s statements for not conforming to an absolute that he never posited, yet here Clinton is<\/em> making an absolute claim\u2014\u201cnowhere\u201d\u2014and they\u2019re not judging it like one. If somebody alleges that low-income women\u2019s health care is completely gone<\/em> in a state, and it is not, in fact, completely gone, that allegation isn\u2019t \u201cHalf True\u201d or \u201cpartially accurate.\u201d It\u2019s false.<\/p>\n

While we might still disagree, there would at least be a defensible consistency to keeping Rubio\u2019s tattoo claim \u201cHalf True\u201d yet demoting Clinton\u2019s \u201cnowhere\u201d to \u201cFalse,\u201d or keeping Clinton\u2019s the same and upgrading Rubio to \u201cTrue.\u201d But that might hurt their efforts to make Republicans look worse and Democrats better.<\/p>\n

\"Governor

Governor Scott Walker<\/p><\/div>\n

Finally, last month PolitiFact criticized<\/a> as \u201cMostly False\u201d Walker\u2019s claim that the \u201codds are pretty high\u201d that someone who sees an ultrasound will opt against abortion. They argued that while \u201csome evidence\u201d backs Walker, \u201cno independent studies\u201d do so, and the \u201clatest academic study we found shows that nearly all women who are more certain about their decision proceed with an abortion even after seeing the ultrasound.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funny, they missed a few things<\/a>, namely that the study they\u2019re talking about was sponsored by Planned Parenthood<\/em> and the data collected by the abortion giant\u2019s personnel at a single one<\/em> of their facilities. And if they went looking for more \u201cindependent studies,\u201d it\u2019s funny that they missed this one<\/a>, in which Mark Gius of Quinnipiac University concluded that \u201cultrasound laws had a very significant and negative effect on the abortion decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"reid_harry\"Now, to be fairer to PolitiFact than they\u2019ve been to us, we should acknowledge that they sometimes get it unconditionally right, like when they awarded<\/a> Harry Reid a \u201cPants on Fire\u201d for claiming Planned Parenthood is \u201cthe only health care\u201d available to \u201cabout 30 percent of women,\u201d or admitting<\/a> the Family Foundation was right that America \u201cis one of only seven nations that allows elective abortions after 20 weeks post-fertilization.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the occasional outbreak of honesty, over less-contentious claims the narrative can afford to sacrifice, does not ultimately outweigh a pattern<\/a> of deliberate<\/a> and partisan<\/a> deceit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
