If it\u2019s a day ending in Y, it must mean there\u2019s a new Salon article lying about something. Let\u2019s just click on over\u2026 sure enough! Here’s Simon Maloy<\/a> with a particularly disingenuous attack on Ted Cruz for \u201cgrotesque demagoguery\u201d over the fetal chop shop Planned Parenthood\u2019s been running.<\/p>\n

He opens by suggesting Cruz is a hypocrite because he\u2019s condemned the IRS\u2019s targeting of conservative organizations by declaring, \u201cno politician has the right to use the machinery of the executive branch to target political enemies,\u201d yet his new pro-life ad<\/a> \u201cpromis[ed] that he, as president, would use the machinery of the executive branch to target a political enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conflating deliberate persecution based on political views<\/a> with prosecution for actual violations of multiple federal laws<\/a>? Yeah, it\u2019s gonna be one of those<\/em> columns.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\"Maybe

Maybe a change of imagery will help the difference sink in.<\/p><\/div>\n

Maloy claims Cruz wants to prosecute and defund the Walmart of abortion over no more than \u201cdonating\u201d fetal \u201ctissue\u201d (organs, Simon, not just tissue<\/a>) for medical research, which \u201cisn\u2019t actually illegal.\u201d As for profiting off those organs, \u201cthere is no indication that Planned Parenthood is actually doing that.\u201d Well, unless you count Dr. Deborah Nucatola talking about how affiliates would like to \u201cdo a little better than break even,\u201d or Dr. Mary Gatter negotiating prices because \u201cit has to be big enough that it is worthwhile.\u201d If all you\u2019re getting is cost reimbursement, haggling doesn\u2019t even enter the picture, because \u201cbreaking even\u201d is exactly what reimbursement is supposed to do.<\/p>\n

But no matter. Doubling down on the lie that all of the PP activities in question are perfectly lawful, Maloy claims that Cruz \u201cpresents the use of fetal tissues for medical research as crime that must be stopped, but his solution \u2013 prosecuting and defunding Planned Parenthood \u2013 won\u2019t change the fact that the practice is explicitly permitted by law.\u201d Thinking he\u2019s trapped Cruz in some grade-A hypocrisy, he claims this runs counter to Cruz\u2019s own support for research funding focused on finding cures for diseases, as well as progress being made toward several diseases thanks to fetal tissue. The cherry on top? The fact that Cruz\u2019s own ad features footage of polio patients\u2014which supposedly undermines his whole case, because fetal tissue was instrumental in developing the polio vaccine.<\/p>\n

Perhaps animation will better help Salon understand.<\/p><\/div>\n

Planned Parenthood\u2019s apologists must think they\u2019ve struck gold here\u2014Rachel Maddow hench-blogger Steve Benen, whose wife works at Planned Parenthood, also proclaims<\/a> that Cruz\u2019s ad \u201caccidentally gives away the game\u201d by highlighting polio in his attack on \u201cfetal-tissue research itself.\u201d (Benen also repeats the lie that there\u2019s \u201cno evidence that Planned Parenthood has done anything wrong.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Simon? Steve? The only problem here is that your premise is completely false<\/em>. Neither Cruz nor anyone else is opposed to using fetal remains in medical research; we\u2019re opposed to acquiring those remains by killing someone. In a more honest media culture it wouldn\u2019t even be necessary to have to explain something so obvious, but as I\u00a0wrote\u00a0last month<\/a>: when it comes to adults, nobody disputes that the donor\u2019s consent matters, that you can\u2019t hold someone against their will, cut them open, and steal their internal organs, or that the law against profiting off their organs<\/a> should remain on the books, despite their medical applications. Pro-lifers are merely arguing that the same ethical standards that pro-aborts already accept post-birth must apply pre-birth as well.<\/p>\n

Get it yet, MSNBC?<\/p><\/div>\n

Indeed, if pro-aborts were honest about their own arguments, they\u2019d be the first to agree<\/a>\u2014bodily-autonomy theory holds that a fetus may well be her mother\u2019s full equal, yet still deserves no protection because she has no right to benefit from her mother\u2019s body without her consent. Applied consistently, this logic can\u2019t possibly justify violating a baby\u2019s bodily integrity, no matter how dire the plight of any stranger who stands to gain.<\/p>\n

Less observant readers might walk away from Salon and MSNBC\u2019s propaganda thinking Ted Cruz is a nutjob who would set medicine back a century for no good reason. But among those who know better, all Simon Maloy has done is publicize\u00a0his work for medical advancement:<\/p>\n

[O]ne of his under-the-radar policy goals: pushing medical researchers to devise cures for deadly and debilitating diseases. In mid-July, Cruz\u00a0held a Senate hearing<\/a>\u00a0with a panel of medical experts to discuss ways to better use government resources when it comes to researching cancer, AIDS, Parkinson\u2019s, Alzheimer\u2019s, diabetes and a bevy of other incurable diseases. \u201cWe pay billions or trillions on the back end, dealing with the consequences of horrific diseases rather than investing and creating the incentives on the front end to cure these diseases once and for all,\u201d Cruz\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0at that hearing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
