Three undercover videos have now been released by the Center for Medical Progress. While the third<\/a> is far more graphic than the first two, each video tends to add to the horror of the viewer.<\/p>\n

Reflecting back upon the second video in which Planned Parenthood Medical Director Dr. Mary Gatter and Senior Director of Medical Services Laurel Felczer converse with actors posing as fetal tissue buyers, there are at least seven highly disturbing statements I read in the transcript.<\/a>…<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1) Gatter:\u00a0<\/strong> The busier you are, the less likely the staff is going to take the time to say \u201cby the way, there\u2019s two more forms for you to sign.\u201d Which is such a waste (inaudible) If we need liver today, and there\u2019s a seventeen week patient who would be perfect, but she wasn\u2019t approached<\/strong>, then you can\u2019t do that.<\/em><\/p>\n

The picture I get after reading this\u00a0is of a waiting room full of women who are viewed by\u00a0medical assistants as\u00a0if they are body part stores. “Oh,\u00a0great, there’s our\u00a0seventeen weeker, she’d be perfect for liver.” Why would they even have a “need”\u00a0for a specific body\u00a0part, if this is simply about donating whatever tissue you have to bio tech companies?<\/p>\n

2) Buyer: <\/strong>What would you expect for intact tissue? What sort of compensation?<\/em><\/p>\n

Gatter:<\/strong> Well why don\u2019t you start by telling me what you\u2019re used to paying.<\/em><\/p>\n

Buyer:<\/strong> Okay. I don\u2019t think so. I\u2019d like to hear, I would like to know, what would make you happy. What would work for you?<\/em><\/p>\n

Gatter:<\/strong> Well, you know in negotiations the person who throws out the figure first is at a loss, right?<\/strong> So [laughs]<\/em><\/p>\n

If the only cost for the tissue donation was reimbursement fees, than why is this even\u00a0up for negotiation? Shouldn’t there\u00a0be established fees? Later on in the transcript, Gatter says Planned Parenthood has been doing tissue donation for decades. In all of that time, there\u00a0hasn’t been a document created or a policy made to determine basic reimbursement costs? How convenient for Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n

3) Buyer: <\/strong>So call the day before? So that-<\/em><\/p>\n

Gatter: <\/strong>For the schedule, say how many second tri\u2019s are- and you know second tri\u2019s could not show up, there\u2019s a lot of slip between plans and the actuality. The staff- your staff would call the night before and say \u201cI need a twelve weeker, do you have any?\u201d<\/strong> That kind of thing. Then they could come in or not come in. It would be irregular for you in terms of whether she could do it or not.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gatter seems to have more concern\u00a0over the fact that a\u00a0bio tech rep would be put out of her way for coming if the ‘twelve weeker’ didn’t show, than the fact that a woman is going through a life-altering procedure.<\/p>\n

4) Gatter:<\/strong> So that\u2019s an interesting concept. Let me explain to you a little bit of a problem, which may not be a big problem, if our usual technique is suction, at 10 to 12 weeks, and we switch to using an IPAS or something with less suction, and increase the odds that it will come out as an intact specimen, then we\u2019re kind of violating the protocol that says to the patient,\u201cWe\u2019re not doing anything different in our care of you.\u201d Now to me, that\u2019s kind of a specious little argument and I wouldn\u2019t object to asking Ian, who\u2019s our surgeon who does the cases, to use an IPAS at that gestational age in order to increase the odds that he\u2019s going to get an intact specimen, but I do need to throw it out there as a concern. Because the patient is signing something and we\u2019re signing something saying that we\u2019re not changing anything with the way we\u2019re managing you, just because we agree to give tissue. You\u2019ve heard that before.<\/em><\/p>\n

Buyer: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s touchy. How do you feel about that?<\/em><\/p>\n

Gatter<\/strong>: I think they\u2019re both totally appropriate techniques, there\u2019s no difference in pain involved, I don\u2019t think the patients would care one iota. So yeah, I\u2019m not making a fuss about that.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

One minute she’s concerned and the next she’ll talk to Ian and\u00a0won’t make a fuss about it.\u00a0 Is the health of the patients and the quality of the procedure the most important? Or is she willing to make changes to ensure a better product for her bio tech customers?<\/p>\n

5) Gatter: <\/strong>Here is my suggestion. Write me a three or four paragraph proposal, which I will then take to Laurel and the organization to see if we want to proceed with this. And then, if we want to pursue this, mutually, I talk to Ian and see how he feels about using a \u201cless crunchy\u201d<\/strong> technique to get more whole specimens.<\/em><\/p>\n

Enough said. We are talking about human beings\u00a0here, not cereal.<\/p>\n

6) Buyer: And are we agreed that $100 would keep you happy.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Laurel:<\/strong> I think so\u2014<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Gatter:<\/strong> Well let me agree to find out what other affiliates in California <\/strong>are getting, and if they\u2019re getting substantially more, then we can discuss it <\/strong>then.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Buyer:<\/strong> Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Gatter:<\/strong> I mean, the money is not the important thing, but it has to be big <\/strong>enough that it is worthwhile.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Again,\u00a0in light of Gatter’s claims that\u00a0the fee is\u00a0just for reimbursements, her\u00a0need to make sure it’s big enough to be\u00a0‘worthwhile’ is troubling.<\/p>\n

7) Dr. Gatter:<\/strong> It\u2019s been years since I talked about compensation, so let me just figure out what others are getting; if this is in the ballpark, it\u2019s fine, if it\u2019s still low then we can bump it up. I want a Lamborghini. [laughs]<\/em><\/p>\n

If it was a joke, it’s a telling one. Abortion procedures are not laughing matters. Gatter’s attitude shows a mindset that devalues the patients she serves and makes light of the difficult,\u00a0life-altering procedures they choose.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
