{"id":66668,"date":"2015-07-15T11:10:58","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T15:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=66668"},"modified":"2015-07-15T12:27:32","modified_gmt":"2015-07-15T16:27:32","slug":"tenth-circuit-rules-little-sisters-poor-hhs-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tenth-circuit-rules-little-sisters-poor-hhs-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Tenth Circuit rules against Little Sisters of the Poor in HHS case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-66670\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Little-Sisters-of-the-Poor-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"Little Sisters of the Poor\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Little-Sisters-of-the-Poor-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Little-Sisters-of-the-Poor.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.becketfund.org\/tenth-circuit-rules-against-little-sisters-hhs-mandate\/\">announced<\/a> that the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against the Little Sisters of the Poor in their ongoing battle against the Obama Administration\u2019s contraception mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Supreme Court siding with the Little Sisters last year, the Tenth Circuit ruled on Tuesday that they must either comply with the mandate or accept IRS penalties, and that the contested accommodation for religious objectors sufficiently \u201crelieves them from complicity\u201d in providing religiously-objectionable services.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Beckett senior counsel and Little Sisters lead attorney Mark Rienzi called it \u201ca national embarrassment\u201d that the federal government \u201cinsists that, instead of providing contraceptives through its own existing exchanges and programs, it must crush the Little Sisters\u2019 faith and force them to participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.becketfund.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Little-Sisters-Brief-on-Interim-Final-Rules.pdf\">brief<\/a> to the Tenth Circuit, the religious liberty law firm argued that the accommodation \u201crequire[s] the Little Sisters to speak in a manner and for a purpose that they cannot: \u2018to trigger payments for the use of contraceptive and abortion-inducing drugs and devices.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Little Sisters Mother Provincial Sr. Loraine Marie Maguire appealed to \u201cour nation\u2019s commitment to ensuring that people from diverse faiths can freely follow God\u2019s calling in their lives [\u2026] All we ask is to be able to continue our religious vocation free from government intrusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Beckett Fund has vowed to appeal the ruling, back up to the Supreme Court if necessary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty has announced that the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against the Little Sisters of the Poor in their ongoing battle against the Obama Administration\u2019s contraception mandate.
