{"id":66118,"date":"2015-07-11T09:30:48","date_gmt":"2015-07-11T13:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=66118"},"modified":"2015-07-11T14:50:43","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T18:50:43","slug":"gawker-thinks-pro-abortion-sites-censor-pro-lifers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gawker-thinks-pro-abortion-sites-censor-pro-lifers\/","title":{"rendered":"Gawker thinks pro-abortion sites should censor pro-lifers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><a href=\"\/news\/buzzfeed-abortion-let-mother-piece-fails-prove-abortion-blessing\/\">Speaking of BuzzFeed<\/a>\u2026you may have noticed that last week, editor-in-chief Ben Smith <a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2015\/06\/30\/buzzfeeds-journalistic-struggles-on-same-sex-marriage-in-gifs\/\">caused a stir<\/a> when he declared that the website\u2019s official position was that \u201cthere are not two sides\u201d to certain issues, including \u201ccivil rights, women\u2019s rights, anti-racism, and LGBT equality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many found it troubling that a major website would demonize reasonable disagreement on a contemporary social issue like marriage by lumping it in with bigotry and sexism, but JK Trotter at Gawker <a href=\"http:\/\/tktk.gawker.com\/buzzfeed-s-support-of-women-s-rights-does-not-include-a-1714932571\">had a different reaction<\/a>: <em>until they declare pro-lifers out of bounds too, BuzzFeed isn\u2019t intolerant enough.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You see, the problem is that BuzzFeed considers itself \u201cunequivocally feminist,\u201d but declined to commit to the proposition that there\u2019s only one respectable viewpoint on abortion. Executive editor Shani Hilton would say only, \u201cI can\u2019t speak for the company, but in editorial we have not taken a stance on the right to obtain an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s \u201cobviously possible to identify yourself as \u2018unequivocally\u2019 feminist even while equivocating on abortion access,\u201d Trotter claims \u201cmost feminists\u201d wouldn\u2019t concur. Why, he asks, \u201cis the company so reluctant to include abortion rights in its expansive definition of \u2018women\u2019s rights\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, one simple answer is that they realize the generation from which their target audience is derived is <a href=\"\/news\/americas-views-abortion-still-dont-match-amanda-marcottes-caricatures-cant-stand\/\">far more circumspect<\/a> toward abortion than they are toward LGBT issues, and it\u2019s generally unwise to tell wide segments of your readership \u201cwe don\u2019t want you here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No matter how much the Gawker crowd might want to dumb down the issue for the ravenous hordes their sister site Jezebel gins up, the world beyond their keyboards understands there\u2019s nothing feminist about an <a href=\"\/news\/born-alive-after-abortions-part-7-abortionist-strangles-baby-gets-away-with-it\/\">act of violence against a helpless child<\/a> which <a href=\"\/news\/post-abortion-woman-tells-story-regret\/\">devastates the women it supposedly helps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pettiness of Trotter\u2019s complaint becomes even more apparent when you consider that <em>in his own post<\/em>, he cites numerous pieces demonstrating that \u201con the whole, BuzzFeed content takes a clear stance on abortion: It should be legal.\u201d Trotter even concedes that they only \u201coccasionally\u201d publish pro-life material. But because they have yet to explicitly deem us woman-hating social pariahs who should not even be conversed with, they\u2019re somehow letting feminism down.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/liberal\">dictionary meaning<\/a> of \u201cliberal\u201d denotes someone who is \u201cnot opposed to new ideas\u201d even if \u201cnot\u2026widely accepted,\u201d who is \u201copen-minded.\u201d A liberal in the classical sense of the term does not fear differing beliefs; in fact, he welcomes them, confident that whoever\u2019s logic is superior will survive any open and direct competition.
