{"id":66092,"date":"2015-07-08T15:40:45","date_gmt":"2015-07-08T19:40:45","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=66092"},"modified":"2016-09-07T16:02:38","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T20:02:38","slug":"fda-finally-acknowledges-already-knew-essure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-finally-acknowledges-already-knew-essure\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA finally acknowledges what we already knew about Essure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The problems associated with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.essure.com\/\">Essure<\/a>, a permanent, non-surgical, irreversible form of birth control have been written about by many\u2014 from <a href=\"http:\/\/wreg.com\/2014\/11\/24\/thousands-of-women-report-problems-with-essure\/\">local <\/a>to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/12\/31\/women-take-to-social-media-to-fight-birth-control-device\/21137583\/\">national<\/a> outlets, to <a href=\"\/news\/essure-birth-control-is-ruining-womens-lives\/\">pro-life<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/essure-birth-control-side-effects-sound-effing-horrible-1463647859\">pro-abortion <\/a>media outlets. And these problems certainly do not paint a pretty picture.<\/p>\n<p>Even if a woman on Essure were to have zero problems, the process as a whole doesn&#8217;t sound very pleasant. Essure prevents pregnancy through the insertion of metal coils into a woman&#8217;s\u00a0fallopian tubes, which causes\u00a0her\u00a0body to grow tissue through them, thus blocking the fallopian tubes. The egg then can not reach the uterus.<\/p>\n<p>If the idea of the insertion of metal coils &#8220;not intended to be removed&#8221; doesn&#8217;t make you uncomfortable, the side effects will. And we&#8217;re not talking about your average side effects&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Angela Desa-Lynch, an administrator for the Essure Problems group, said the women in the group have experienced these problems to the extreme.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhatever they\u2019ve put on the label, multiply it by 200,\u201d she said. \u201cThey say chronic pain, or they say mild cramping or abdomen pain, but they don\u2019t tell you that it\u2019s debilitating. They don\u2019t tell you that it\u2019s &#8216;I can\u2019t get out of bed and take care of my kids&#8217; kind of pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Women like Desa-Lynch have come together\u00a0against Essure, forming\u00a0groups like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.essureprocedure.net\/essure-stories\/\">Essure Stories<\/a>\u00a0(from Erin Brockovich) and <a href=\"http:\/\/essureproblems.webs.com\/\">Essure Problems. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>National Catholic Register <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/fda-announces-additional-risks-of-essure-contraceptive-device\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0late last month that\u00a0the FDA, after receiving thousands of complaints about the product, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/MedicalDevices\/ProductsandMedicalProcedures\/ImplantsandProsthetics\/EssurePermanentBirthControl\/ucm452254.htm\">updated a list of risks and complications<\/a>, and will hold a public hearing on September 24.\u00a0NC Register also mentioned that Essure has caused the deaths of at least five women and five preborn children.<\/p>\n<p>While the statements from such groups against Essure have seen the FDA&#8217;s move\u00a0as &#8220;taking some steps in the right direction,&#8221; they are still determined to take Essure off of the market. This is understandable considering the kind of pain many of them have experienced.<\/p>\n<p>Also noted\u00a0by NC Register, pharmaceutical giant Bayer, which has manufactured and distributed Essure since 2014, claims safety is a &#8220;top priority,&#8221; yet seems to support only\u00a0those who have not suffered from these medical coils. If Bayer truly\u00a0cared about safety, it would do more than &#8220;welcome&#8230; open dialogue&#8221; while touting\u00a0its success in the face of those who have suffered so much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The problems associated with Essure, a permanent, non-surgical, irreversible form of birth control have been written about by many\u2014 from local to national outlets, to pro-life and pro-abortion media outlets.
