\"salon-logo\"Once you\u2019ve written something as blatantly ethically bankrupt as Mary Elizabeth Williams\u2019 notorious “So what if abortion ends life?”<\/a> Salon<\/em> piece \u2014 which, you may recall, contained such gems as, \u201cAll life is not equal\u201d and claimed that a preborn son or daughter targeted for death is a \u201clife worth sacrificing\u201d \u2014 there\u2019s pretty much no low too low to sink to next.<\/p>\n

So the dishonesty with which Williams attacks<\/a> my July 3 Live Action piece<\/a> on life-of-the-mother abortions should come as no surprise. Her dishonesty begins with the tiny detail that nowhere does she mention my name or Live Action\u2019s name, nor does she include a link to the post for readers to verify what I actually said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I only learned of Williams’ piece thanks to the diligence of pro-life blogger Jivin Jehoshaphat<\/a>, who notified<\/a> me on Twitter and was subsequently blocked<\/a> by Williams for holding her accountable.\u00a0(Just in case she changes it, here’s an archived copy<\/a> of exactly how the page looked on July 6 at the time of this writing.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen will the side of \u2018life\u2019 acknowledge the lifesaving side of abortion?\u201d Williams asks, sneering that \u201carguing with the vehemently anti-choice faction is like arguing a can of soup \u2014 pointless and unsatisfying and possibly crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

After summarizing Paola Dragnic\u2019s BuzzFeed article I discussed last time (but before moving on to me), Williams lies about what<\/a> really happened<\/a> to Savita Halappanavar<\/a>, complains that Paraguay wouldn\u2019t kill a child carried by a 10-year-old rape victim, blasts efforts to save a child\u2019s life in the Marlise Munoz case<\/a> (never mind that such efforts have been successful<\/a> in other cases), and bemoans the \u201calarmingly limited options\u201d of women whose babies have fatal abnormalities.<\/p>\n

Aside from the particular facts she misrepresents, here\u2019s where Williams\u2019 2013 admissions<\/a> \u2014 that \u201clife starts at conception,\u201d that abortion is \u201cnot a black and white issue,\u201d that fetuses \u201cdon\u2019t qualify as human life only if they\u2019re intended to be born,\u201d that there\u2019s no \u201csingle magic moment when a fetus becomes a person,\u201d and that it \u201cseems absurd to suggest that the only thing that makes us fully human is the short ride out of some lady\u2019s vagina\u201d \u2014 come back to bite her. Once you\u2019ve conceded all that, you\u2019ve also conceded that on some level at least, it\u2019s respectable to come to different conclusions about how much weight that fetal life deserves in all of the cases she mentions.<\/p>\n

But never mind moral contemplation; there\u2019s a pro-life blogger to demonize!<\/p>\n

\n

Naturally, a leading \u201clife\u201d based site has seized upon Dragnic\u2019s Buzzfeed story to praise women who made \u201cthe opposite choice, to risk and sacrifice their own lives that their sons and daughters might live,\u201d noting that \u201cany discussion of abortion, particularly one rooted in firsthand experience, is incomplete if it ignores the party it most deeply affects.\u201d This is the almost laughable classic stance. Even if there\u2019s a slight nod to the possibility that sometimes a woman might actually die bringing a nonviable fetus into the world, it comes with the caveat that a really noble and good woman would take the chance anyway. But don\u2019t worry, across the world, approximately 800 women a day die from pregnancy and childbirth complications,<\/a> so you get your wish, team \u201clife\u201d!<\/p>\n

I am really, really, really, sick of the despicable lie that abortion is just a straight up act of selfishness, committed by baby hating she-monsters and the devil doctors who provide them services [\u2026] the fiercely delusional side of \u201clife\u201d doesn\u2019t see things that way. They don\u2019t want to consider the hard choices that make up reality. And they don\u2019t want to consider that if you say that a human life has value and you steadfastly refuse to value women, you\u2019re not just ridiculously hypocritical, you\u2019re being downright dangerous.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Reading that, it\u2019s no wonder Williams chose not to give her readers more than a snippet of what I actually wrote<\/a> \u2014 her accusations that I think \u201ca really noble and good woman would take the chance anyway\u201d and that \u201cabortion is just a straight up act of selfishness\u201d are awfully hard to square with the parts where I say \u201cthis was no case of \u2018inconvenience\u2019 or casual disregard for her child\u2019s welfare,\u201d \u201call our hearts break for her ordeal,\u201d or that \u201cnone of us truly know[s] what we would do in any of their shoes, and different situations where the odds of survival for both mother and child can vary wildly are not perfectly analogous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her claims that I\u2019m somehow \u201cdownright dangerous\u201d or giving no more than \u201ca slight nod\u201d to life-of-the-mother cases rings hollow against the paragraphs I devoted to pointing out that such deaths are beside the point, for the simple fact that no major pro-life activist or legislation in America would take the choice away from women in life-threatening situations. Geez, Mary, I even specifically mentioned challenging people like you to give me an example to the contrary.<\/p>\n

And Williams’ assertion that I \u201cdon\u2019t want to consider the hard choices that make up reality\u201d is simply asinine, as she\u2019s responding to an article I specifically wrote to consider the subject.<\/p>\n

But the truth would have killed the mood of righteous indignation she was going for. Williams wanted to gin up hatred in her audience, making women fear they were potential victims of yet another anti-choice misogynist, so she decided she couldn’t trust them to follow a link and make their own informed decision about what a bad, bad man Calvin Freiburger is. And because Salon\u2019s<\/em> editorial standards are somehow even<\/a> lower<\/a> than<\/a> we<\/a> thought<\/a>, they\u2019re all too happy to comply.<\/p>\n

That Mary Elizabeth Williams is both fanatically pro-abortion and wildly dishonest are not coincidences. Pro-aborts are constantly proving that character flaws love company, and a flaw as severe as comfort with the slaughter of innocents is virtually never alone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
