On Sunday, PolitiFact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/statements\/2015\/jun\/28\/donald-trump\/trump-pro-choice-polling-numbers-declining\/\">slapped a \u201cFalse\u201d rating<\/a> on Donald Trump\u2019s claim that \u201cin terms of polling, the pro-choice is going down a little bit\u201d because Gallup says otherwise:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In May of this year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/183434\/americans-choose-pro-choice-first-time-seven-years.aspx\">the polling group found<\/a> 50 percent of Americans identify as pro-choice, compared to 44 percent of Americans who identify as pro-life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That&#8217;s actually up, not down.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The gap is outside the margin of error, the first time the pro-choice position has a statistically significant edge since 2008. If anything, the pro-choice position is gaining ground, not losing it in recent years. In 2012, 50 percent of people identified as pro-life, Gallup found, compared to 41 percent who identified as pro-choice.<\/p>\n<p>When most people hear the phrase \u201cfact-checking,\u201d they don\u2019t think it means \u201ccherry-picking.\u201d In fact, the latter defeats the purpose of the former. But that\u2019s exactly what PolitiFact did here: looked at how the numbers behind each label compared and called it a day. But the <a href=\"\/news\/breaking-55-percent-americans-want-abortions-made-illegal\/\">very same poll reveals<\/a> that when it comes to specific <em>policies<\/em>, the majority was still pro-life after all\u201455 percent said abortion should be legal in few or no circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Such an omission is doubly egregious considering the PolitiFact report mentions a study \u201cthat found many Americans identified as pro-life and pro-choice,\u201d meaning <em>they knew as they were writing it <\/em>that relying on the labels alone could be misleading.<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact attempts to supplement their shoddy reading of the numbers with Pew research suggesting \u201c51 percent of adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while with 43 percent say it should be illegal all or most of the time. Those percentages have been near the same level for more than 20 years\u201d\u2014y\u2019know, the question they chose not to look at in their Exhibit A, Gallup.<\/p>\n<p>What they don\u2019t tell you is how many other polls say different. According to Marist\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kofc.org\/un\/en\/resources\/communications\/Abortion_in_America_January2015_For_Release_150121.pdf\">last<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kofc.org\/un\/en\/resources\/communications\/marist-poll-abortion-restrictions2014.pdf\">two<\/a> annual abortion surveys, the percentage of Americans who would ban all elective abortions (anything outside rape, incest, or life of the mother, at most) was 60% in May 2009, 56% in December 2012, 56% in January 2014, and back up to 59% in January 2015. In March 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/06\/cnn-poll-wide-divide-over-abortion\/\">ORC international found<\/a> for CNN that 58% said it should be legal in \u201cfew\u201d or no circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>And in the most remarkable findings of all, CNS News\u2019s Terence Jeffrey <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/blog\/terence-p-jeffrey\/37-straight-gallup-polls-majority-abortion-should-be-illegal-all-or-most\">pointed out<\/a> at the beginning of this month, \u201cin 37 straight surveys conducted over the course of 21 years\u201d by Gallup, a majority has <em>always<\/em> said abortion should be either mostly or entirely banned. \u201cIn the past 20 years, the percentage who say abortion should be illegal in all circumstances or all but a few circumstances has never dropped below 54 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most headline-grabbing factoid from Gallup\u2019s latest report <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/abortion-one-poll-result-shouldnt-distract-from-the-long-term-increase-in-the-pro-life-movements-popularity-139784\/\">does not contradict the long-term trends<\/a> in its broader research or even the fine print of its latest findings.
