{"id":65288,"date":"2015-06-25T11:53:17","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T15:53:17","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=65288"},"modified":"2015-06-25T13:18:04","modified_gmt":"2015-06-25T17:18:04","slug":"baby-born-half-heart-fighting-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baby-born-half-heart-fighting-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Baby born with half a heart is fighting for his life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Doctors told Whitney Allison and Troy Dunn to abort their one in a million son.\u00a0 A\u00a024 weeks gestation, Baby Marcus was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome \u2014\u00a0meaning he has half a heart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe options were to terminate the pregnancy, deliver at term and hold our baby until he died in our arms, or deliver him and opt for high-risk surgery, which is what we did,\u201d Allison told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maitlandmercury.com.au\/story\/3161185\/baby-born-with-half-a-heart-a-true-miracle-photos\/\">The Maitland Mercury<\/a>. \u201cWe knew there was a low survival rate and doctors strongly recommended I terminated, but we were willing to take the risk to give Marcus a chance at life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At just two days old, Marcus survived his first open heart surgery when doctors placed a shunt into an artery to ensure blood flow to his lungs. He is now 11 weeks old, and has a second surgery scheduled in a few weeks. Marcus\u00a0has been in the hospital since his birth.<\/p>\n<p>Allison told the Maitland Mercury that after Marcus\u2019 first surgery, she sensed there was something wrong and it turned out he had a major bleeding issue. The couple was told to say their goodbyes to their baby.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn refused to say goodbye, and simply kissed Marcus and instructed doctors to save his son.
