{"id":65241,"date":"2015-06-24T21:02:42","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T01:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=65241"},"modified":"2015-06-25T13:13:06","modified_gmt":"2015-06-25T17:13:06","slug":"pro-life-campaign-rebukes-un-liberalizing-irish-abortion-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-campaign-rebukes-un-liberalizing-irish-abortion-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-Life Campaign rebukes UN on liberalizing Irish abortion laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Irish Pro-Life Campaign is pushing back against pressure from the United Nations to relax the country\u2019s pro-life laws, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2015\/0623\/709910-abortion\/\">RTE News reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the UN\u2019s Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/social-affairs\/un-committee-seeks-irish-abortion-vote-1.2258874\">called on<\/a> Ireland to hold a referendum to repeal its constitutional guarantee of preborn humans\u2019 equal right to life and to revise its 2013 Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s \u201chighly restrictive legislation on abortion,\u201d the committee claimed, imposes a \u201cdiscriminatory impact on women who cannot afford to get abortion abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in response, Pro-Life Campaign Deputy Chair Cora Sherlock told RTE\u2019s morning Ireland that it was inappropriate for the UN to lecture Ireland on its abortion laws, saying that while debate is always welcome, a new referendum is unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, she argued the UN committee \u201cmade a fundamental error\u201d in its analysis of the 2013 act: \u201cThat is an act which let\u2019s remember allows abortion for the full nine months of pregnancy where there is threat of suicide and that&#8217;s not based on any medical evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Irish Pro-Life Campaign is pushing back against pressure from the United Nations to relax the country\u2019s pro-life laws, RTE News reports.
