{"id":65012,"date":"2015-06-19T10:47:33","date_gmt":"2015-06-19T14:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=65012"},"modified":"2015-06-22T10:52:56","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T14:52:56","slug":"slate-writer-furious-cant-outlaw-crisis-pregnancy-centers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/slate-writer-furious-cant-outlaw-crisis-pregnancy-centers\/","title":{"rendered":"Slate writer furious she can&#8217;t outlaw crisis pregnancy centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-51179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/angry-pro-choicer.jpg\" alt=\"angry pro-choicer\" width=\"182\" height=\"220\" \/>In yet another sign that pro-aborts just cannot stand having to compete for pregnant women\u2019s time (and, to them, money), <em>Slate<\/em> blogger Meaghan Winter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/double_x\/doublex\/2015\/06\/crisis_pregnancy_centers_three_legal_strategies_for_bringing_them_down.single.html\">asks<\/a> (hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/newsbusters.org\/blogs\/connor-williams\/2015\/06\/17\/pro-abortion-slate-author-why-are-crisis-pregnancy-centers-not\">Connor Williams at NewsBusters<\/a>), \u201cWhy are crisis pregnancy centers not illegal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To sane readers, \u201cbecause it\u2019s a free country\u201d might be a sufficient answer; \u201cbecause we value charity in this country\u201d might be another. But Ms. Winter is having none of that nonsense:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[CPCs] often use misleading advertisements\u2014sometimes even posing as abortion providers\u2014and regularly dispense inaccurate information in order to dissuade women from accessing contraception and abortion, as NARAL Pro-Choice America <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prochoiceamerica.org\/media\/press-releases\/2015\/pr03092015_cpc-report.html\">has documented<\/a>. A 2006 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chsourcebook.com\/articles\/waxman2.pdf\">congressional report<\/a> found that federally funded CPCs informed patients seeking abortions that the procedure \u201ccould increase the risk of breast cancer, result in sterility, and lead to suicide and \u2018post-abortion stress disorder.\u2019&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That NARAL report just happens to be the one <a href=\"\/news\/debunking-narals-lies-about-crisis-pregnancy-centers-part-1\/\">I dissected for Live Action<\/a> back in March. That debunking also analyzes much of the same material as the second report she cites, which was the brainchild of former Congressman Henry Waxman.<\/p>\n<p>Waxman is a pro-abortion radical who was notorious for churning out bogus investigations at the rate some go through potato chips\u2014as many as <a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,1562974,00.html\">2,000 over just one 8-year-span<\/a> of his four decades in Congress. (Also noteworthy: the Heritage Foundation\u2019s Melissa Pardue <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/research\/reports\/2004\/12\/waxman-report-is-riddled-with-errors-and-inaccuracies\">found a previous Waxman report<\/a> attacking abstinence education to be \u201criddled with errors and inaccuracies.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>But never mind that Winter\u2019s stated rationale for CPCs\u2019 illegitimacy is wrong; her rationale is basically taken as a given throughout the rest of the piece, which is concerned with how to crack down on this societal menace. Sadly, she\u2019s pessimistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn every state in the U.S., consumer protection laws prohibit businesses from engaging in false advertising and other misleading practices,\u201d but Winter thinks the consumer fraud approach is a dead end because CPCs\u2019 \u201cvictims\u201d are too poor and lack the connections to file fraud claims. Aside from the absurd implication that Planned Parenthood, NARAL, the National Organization for Women, or any number of other pro-abortion groups couldn\u2019t back such suits if they really wanted to, the bigger issue is that what she describes\u2014 neutral-sounding names and not discussing religion on websites \u2014isn\u2019t actually false advertising (again, <a href=\"\/news\/debunking-narals-lies-about-crisis-pregnancy-centers-part-1\/\">see here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Next she explores the church-state angle:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The First Amendment means we\u2019re free to be motivated by all kinds of personal beliefs. But it also puts limits on a state\u2019s ability to subsidize religion and religious activities. If CPCs are using state funds to proselytize, there could be a case to be made that they are violating the constitutional separation of church and state. The line between religious and government activities is often blurry when it comes to CPCs, however, and that haziness makes litigation difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Nonsense. Aiding pregnant women is widely recognized as a secular purpose. Someone\u2019s religious motivation for doing so no more makes their work proselytizing than does their work at a religious homeless shelter, soup kitchen, or disaster relief effort.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27250\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27250\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/3d-ultrasound-fetus-baby3-300x270.jpg\" alt=\"Fetal facepalm\" width=\"300\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/3d-ultrasound-fetus-baby3-300x270.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/3d-ultrasound-fetus-baby3.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fetal facepalm<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lastly, Winter ponders busting CPCs for \u201cunlicensed practice of medicine.\u201d But again, <a href=\"\/news\/debunking-narals-lies-about-crisis-pregnancy-centers-part-three\/\">as we explored in March: <\/a>Project Ultrasound only provides ultrasound machines to CPCs that do have the proper medical credentials, NARAL has admitted they\u2019re against even licensed CPCs being able to call themselves medical professionals, and after supposedly grilling Maryland CPCs on this very point, NARAL suspiciously opted not to reveal the answers they got.<\/p>\n<p>So, much to pro-aborts\u2019 dismay, crisis pregnancy centers remain free to terrorize women with pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, baby supplies, parenting classes, post-abortion counseling, and information on adoption, medical care, and financial aid.<\/p>\n<p>The horror.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In yet another sign that pro-aborts just cannot stand having to compete for pregnant women\u2019s time (and, to them, money), Slate blogger Meaghan Winter asks (hat tip to Connor Williams at NewsBusters), \u201cWhy are crisis pregnancy centers not illegal?\u201d To sane readers, \u201cbecause it\u2019s a free country\u201d might be a sufficient answer;
