{"id":64986,"date":"2015-06-18T18:28:14","date_gmt":"2015-06-18T22:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=64986"},"modified":"2015-06-18T18:30:19","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T22:30:19","slug":"ben-carson-reflecting-slavery-made-pro-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ben-carson-reflecting-slavery-made-pro-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Carson: Reflecting on slavery made me pro-life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In 2012 video <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/andrewkaczynski\/ben-carson-compares-abortion-to-slavery#.wi4MKrpOg\">newly uncovered by BuzzFeed<\/a>, Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson delivered his sharpest attack on abortion yet, equating the procedure with slavery.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hJWtMHKQcPM&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<\/p>\n<p>Admitting he once considered himself pro-choice\u00a0on the issue, Carson told the audience at a Maryland Right to Life banquet that \u201cI was a live-and-let-live type of individual,\u201d but then he began reflecting on slavery.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe slave owners felt that they should be able to do whatever they wanted to do. And there were some people who were not slave owners who said, \u2018You can do what you want to do, but I don\u2019t,\u201d he continued, alluding to the popular-sovereignty stance espoused by Abraham Lincoln\u2019s Senate opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/stephen-a-douglas\">Stephen Douglas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Carson came to see the ethics of abortion as more analogous to the abolitionists\u2019 view of slavery as \u201csuch an evil that they want to make sure that it is rooted out of our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To the view that \u201cI can do anything I want\u201d with a baby because \u201cit is in my uterus,\u201d Carson responded: \u201cDoes that convey the right to terminate it? It doesn\u2019t convey that right anymore than a slave owner had the right to terminate a slave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carson has condemned abortion on multiple occasions in recent years, such as in a 2014 column entitled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/jan\/21\/a-physicians-view-on-the-sanctity-of-life\/\">A physician&#8217;s view of the sanctity of life<\/a>,\u201d and a speech at the 2013 Values Voters Summit in which <a href=\"\/news\/straight-talk-dr-ben-carson-war-babies\/\">he suggested<\/a> abortion-on-demand makes America a \u201cheathen\u201d society.<\/p>\n<p>Carson currently polls at fourth place in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2016\/president\/us\/2016_republican_presidential_nomination-3823.html\">RealClearPolitics.com&#8217;s<\/a> polling average for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"filename-text\">Photo courtesy of\u00a0Christopher Halloran for Shutterstock.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2012 video newly uncovered by BuzzFeed, Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson delivered his sharpest attack on abortion yet, equating the procedure with slavery.
