{"id":64982,"date":"2015-06-18T10:25:46","date_gmt":"2015-06-18T14:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=64982"},"modified":"2015-06-18T17:20:40","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T21:20:40","slug":"controversy-erupts-texas-high-school-blocks-planned-parenthood-student-computers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/controversy-erupts-texas-high-school-blocks-planned-parenthood-student-computers\/","title":{"rendered":"Controversy erupts as Texas high school blocks Planned Parenthood from student computers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Houston Independent School District in Texas is under fire after a student at Lamar High School discovered that the district blocked access to PlannedParenthood.org, the National Abortion Federation\u2019s ProChoice.org, and other pro-abortion websites on its Wi-Fi network, the Houston Press <a href=\"http:\/\/www.houstonpress.com\/news\/updated-is-hisd-blocking-pro-choice-websites-on-high-school-campuses-7518200\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess Denied,\u201d read the message Grace Wells received. \u201cThe site you are attempting to visit is blocked because it belongs to the following category: Abortion.\u201d Not blocked, however, was ProLifeAcrossAmerica.org.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>HISD initially told the Houston Press that \u201cdistrict policy is in line with the federal Children&#8217;s Internet Protection Act,\u201d which requires schools to block minors from seeing content of a pornographic or otherwise harmful nature.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ifea.net\/cipa.pdf\">CIPA&#8217;s text<\/a> does not specifically mention abortion, but\u00a0Planned Parenthood has encouraged minors to view pornography in <a href=\"http:\/\/plannedparenthoodexposed.com\/sexed\/\">consultations caught on hidden camera<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/planned_parenthood_youth_website_promotes_pornography_to_teenagers\/\">on Teenwire.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to further media inquiries and pressure from Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, HISD claims their policy is to block both pro- and anti-abortion content for elementary students, but allow it for middle and high school students. \u201cIT will be reviewing internet filters for student accounts to ensure all settings are in compliance with district policy,\u201d they promise in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Wells feels the district is doing a disservice to its students, in large part because \u201c97 percent of their business is not related to abortion [\u2026] It&#8217;s a medical resource, an informational resource, and there&#8217;s a ton of information on their website that we&#8217;re not allowed to see on campus that would be extremely helpful to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, that percentage is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.all.org\/article\/index\/id\/ODk1OQ\/\">calculated<\/a> by weighing abortions equally with far less expensive or elaborate services, such as pap smears or picking up birth control. More <a href=\"\/news\/all-about-that-abortion-a-fitting-tagline-for-planned-parenthood\/\">recent figures<\/a> suggest that 94 percent of pregnant women entering Planned Parenthood receive abortions, which are rising as the amount of adoption referrals, prenatal care, and tests for other medical conditions have declined in recent years.
