The number of abortion facilities in Ohio has dropped by almost half since\u00a0the Buckeye State upped\u00a0restrictions\u00a0protecting women and preborn children over the past four years,\u00a0a review of records by the Associated Press\u00a0shows. State data\u00a0reveals\u00a0that the number of abortion procedures is also declining, as part of a nationwide trend.<\/p>\n

Seven abortion providers out of 16 have either closed down mills or curbed abortion services since 2011, while an eighth facility – a Toledo-based abortion center –\u00a0is currently operating amidst\u00a0litigation.<\/p>\n

Currently, nine abortion facilities remain open in the state.<\/p>\n

The number of induced abortions in Ohio dipped from\u00a025,473 in 2012 to 23,216 in 2013. During that time frame, five of seven abortion providers either shut down or trimmed services. The number was the lowest ever recorded since the state\u00a0began collecting\u00a0data in 1976. The drop parallels\u00a0a similar national narrative: since\u00a0the 1990s, the number of abortions have dropped across the country.<\/p>\n

As the nation’s seventh most populous state, Ohio’s political\u00a0purple\u00a0has bolstered the state\u00a0as a fierce battleground; however, Ohio\u00a0has some of the strongest\u00a0pro-life laws in the nation.\u00a0The waning number of abortion mills\u00a0places the state\u00a0behind Texas, which\u00a0has also seen a record number of closures since pro-life laws were\u00a0placed on the books. Seventeen out of 40 abortion facilities\u00a0shut down after Texas tightened\u00a0restrictions.<\/p>\n

Advocates on both sides of the abortion debate say limitations on abortion have played a significant role in shuttering Ohio facilities.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press reports the following abortion facility closures in Ohio:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Center for Women’s Health in Cleveland (2013)<\/p>\n

\u2014 Center for Choice (2013)<\/p>\n

\u2014 Capital Care Network (2013)<\/p>\n

\u2014 A Capital Care Network facility in Columbus (2012)<\/p>\n

The following abortion mills curtailed abortion services since 2011:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Lebanon<\/a> Road Surgery Center<\/p>\n

\u2014 Complete Healthcare for Women, in Columbus, also known as the Cleveland Avenue Professional Center<\/p>\n

\u2014 Northeast Ohio Women’s Center<\/p>\n

Ohio Right to Life President Mike Gonidakis applauded the drop, crediting the decline to pro-life legislation and the efforts of crisis pregnancy centers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a combination of a lot of things,\u201d Gonidakis told the Associated Press. \u201cOur society\u2019s changing. More and more women are choosing life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since 2011, Ohio has implemented significant restrictions on abortion, including a ban on abortion after a baby is determined viable to survive outside of the womb; requiring women to obtain an ultrasound and listen to the fetal heartbeat prior to an abortion; and tightening the ability for abortion mills\u00a0to obtain a\u00a0hospital transfer agreement from publicly-funded hospitals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
