{"id":6310,"date":"2011-09-13T03:35:59","date_gmt":"2011-09-13T07:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/?p=6310"},"modified":"2013-04-01T06:42:44","modified_gmt":"2013-04-01T10:42:44","slug":"choose-life-license-plates-aclu-misses-the-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/choose-life-license-plates-aclu-misses-the-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Choose life license plates: ACLU misses the point"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Once again, advocates for \u201cchoice\u201d have demonstrated that they often only care about one choice.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU of North Carolina filed a lawsuit on Thursday over the State\u2019s new \u201cChoose Life\u201d license plates.\u00a0 The ACLU claims that the license plates (the proceeds of which go to a pregnancy care center) violate First Amendment rights, as there is no option of a pro-abort license plate.<a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/ncchooselife.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6312 alignright\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"ncchooselife\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/ncchooselife.jpg\" width=\"318\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a portion of the ACLU <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acluofnc.org\/?q=aclu-nc-files-lawsuit-challenging-discriminatory-license-plate-scheme\">press release<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf anti-choice drivers are permitted to express their views on their license plates, people like me should be able to express our view that women deserve full reproductive freedom,\u201d said Sue Holliday, plaintiff and certified nurse midwife.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The lawsuit asks the Court to declare that the current license plate scheme constitutes viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment and to order the State to cease developing and issuing the \u201cChoose Life\u201d license plate without authorizing a countervailing pro-choice plate.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So why are these two words &#8212; \u201cChoose Life\u201d &#8212; such a threat?<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The entire lawsuit is based on the idea that only one side of the \u201cchoice\u201d issue is being addressed.\u00a0 This is evidenced in the press release when it labels the license plates \u201canti-choice,\u201d promotes a \u201cRespect Choice\u201d plate, and calls for a\u00a0 \u201ccountervailing pro-choice plate.\u201d\u00a0 This misses the point.\u00a0 Somehow the first word on the license plate was entirely overlooked.\u00a0 The term \u201cChoose Life\u201d implies that there is a choice, so obviously a lack of choice is not the issue being addressed by the license plates.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU claims that only one side of the \u201cissue\u201d is being presented, but has failed to recognize what that issue is.\u00a0 As already noted, the plate doesn\u2019t take a stance on the issue of choice, and it doesn\u2019t even condemn abortion.\u00a0 The real issue at hand is what choice should be made: abortion or life.\u00a0 The North Carolina license plate takes a position on that issue, and that issue alone. The only equal, reciprocal license plate would be \u201cchoose abortion,\u201d or, even more explicit, \u201cchoose death.\u201d\u00a0 But I doubt that is what the ACLU is looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-choice advocates are fond of saying that they seek to reduce the number of abortions, just by different means than the pro-life crowd.\u00a0 So, if our goal on both sides of the life debate is to have fewer abortions, why is it a problem to encourage women to choose life?\u00a0 If abortion advocates really stand for choice, why is it threatening for pro-lifers to promote the choice they believe in?<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, for some, asking women to choose life for their unborn child is the wrong choice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once again, advocates for \u201cchoice\u201d have demonstrated that they often only care about one choice.
