{"id":62840,"date":"2015-04-25T11:12:12","date_gmt":"2015-04-25T15:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=62840"},"modified":"2016-01-19T21:16:18","modified_gmt":"2016-01-20T02:16:18","slug":"abortion-advocates-label-fetal-pain-research-junk-science-light-pro-life-gains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-advocates-label-fetal-pain-research-junk-science-light-pro-life-gains\/","title":{"rendered":"Preborn babies can feel pain in the womb, research shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>While pro-abortion groups claim that pro-lifers are turning to &#8220;junk science&#8221; to pass restrictions\u00a0on late-term abortions, substantive research shows\u00a0that preborn babies <em>do <\/em>feel pain\u2014 possibly with an even greater intensity than adults. \u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The LA Times <a href=\"http:\/\/&quot;Abortion restrictions relying on 'junk science,' rights advocates say.&quot;\">recently addressed <\/a>such\u00a0abortion regulations, claiming\u00a0that bans on late-term abortion procedures across the country are being passed on the basis of &#8220;junk science.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0publication\u00a0refers\u00a0to a <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=201429\">JAMA 2005 study<\/a> that claims\u00a0preborn children cannot\u00a0feel pain until 27 weeks gestation. Credit: Lexi Fretz &amp; F2 Photography<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, new research<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorsonfetalpain.com\/\">\u00a0shows that\u00a0preborn children may feel pain at 20 weeks.<\/a>\u00a0Researchers note that\u00a0pain receptors appear around the mouth roughly four\u00a0to\u00a0five weeks after\u00a0fertilization, and the preborn child can respond to touch at six weeks. By 18 weeks, &#8220;pain receptors have appeared throughout the body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Preborn children also have an &#8220;early fetal response to painful stimuli,&#8221; researchers say. These can be detected roughly five weeks after fertilization.\u00a0And, not only can preborn children feel pain, they may feel it <em>more <\/em>intensely. In 2004, Dr. Kanwalijeet &#8220;Sunny&#8221; Anand testified the following before Congress:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMechanisms that inhibit or moderate the experience of pain do not begin to develop until 32 to 34 weeks post-fertilization,&#8221;\u00a0Anand said. &#8220;Any pain the unborn child experiences before these pain inhibitors are in place is likely more intense than the pain an older infant or adult experiences when subjected to similar types of injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57365\" style=\"width: 681px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57365\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/human-fetus-20-weeks1.jpg\" alt=\"Baby at 20 weeks\" width=\"671\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/human-fetus-20-weeks1.jpg 671w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/human-fetus-20-weeks1-300x149.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-57365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Preborn baby\u00a0at 20 weeks of development.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/archive\/abortion\/Fetal_Pain\/Witnesses1797Hearing052313.html\">Dr. Maureen Condic <\/a>and other experts\u00a0also testified<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLytHy7PQxOT6vsu5ModcqLsLp4AmKX-wH\"> to Congress<\/a> that preborn children can feel pain <em>by<\/em> 20 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors on Fetal Pain refuted the claims of the\u00a0JAMA study, noting that it is the &#8220;most frequently cited source&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The JAMA authors concede that pain receptors are present throughout the unborn child\u2019s entire body by no later than 16 weeks after fertilization and nerves link these receptors to the brain\u2019s thalamus and subcortical plate by no later than 20 weeks post fertilization.<\/p>\n<p>They also concede that the application of painful stimuli is associated with significant increases in stress hormones known as the stress response.\u00a0 Notwithstanding these facts, the authors deny unborn pain at that stage on the assumption that a functioning cerebral cortex is needed.\u00a0 However, see point <a href=\"\/Users\/JPopik\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/Temporary%20Internet%20Files\/Content.Outlook\/0BD4ODUU\/Unborn%20Pain%20Deniers62613.doc#responseone\">number one<\/a> above for the substantial medical evidence that the thalamus alone is sufficient.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, researchers highlight the JAMA study&#8217;s interesting connection\u00a0with the abortion industry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Moreover, rather than the article being an independent neutral representation of mainstream medical analysis, its lead author (who went on to pursue medical studies after publication) was previously employed as a lawyer by NARAL, the pro-abortion political advocacy organization. \u00a0The Philadelphia Inquirer was the first to document several authors\u2019 conflicts of interest. More can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/08\/26\/health\/26pain.html?_r=0\">here<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.justfactsdaily.com\/when-do-humans-begin-to-feel-pain\/\">James D. Agresti<\/a>, who\u00a0studied fetal pain and &#8220;conscious, deliberate behaviors&#8221; in\u00a0twins,<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0013199\">\u00a0<\/a>noted the miraculous motor ability of preborn children. Based on a study<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0013199\"> from PLOS ONE<\/a>, researchers\u00a0found that &#8220;starting from the 14th week of gestation, twin fetuses plan and execute movements specifically aimed at the co-twin.&#8221; And, such &#8220;early contacts do not occur accidentally, but reflect motor planning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/Pdf\/338146\">A 2012 Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy\u00a0<\/a>paper\u00a0explains that 16 weeks after the woman&#8217;s last menstrual period, &#8220;&#8230; pain transmission from a peripheral [pain] receptor to the cortex is possible and completely developed from 26 weeks gestation.&#8221; A<a href=\"http:\/\/anesthesiology.pubs.asahq.org\/article.aspx?articleid=1944707&amp;resultClick=1\">\u00a02001 paper in<\/a> Anesthesiology<em>\u00a0<\/em>mentions that &#8220;the human fetus from 18-20 weeks elaborates pituitary-adrenal, sympatho-adrenal, and circulatory stress responses to physical insults.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If preborn babies could not feel pain, why would they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2015\/01\/16\/baby-screamed-during-live-birth-abortion-we-cant-forget-this-babys-cries\/\">scream when born alive <\/a>as a result of botched\u00a0late-term abortions? Is this not proof enough?<\/p>\n<p>The abortion movement seems all too willing to rely on science that agrees only with their point of view, even when studies, science, or real life examples prove otherwise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While pro-abortion groups claim that pro-lifers are turning to &#8220;junk science&#8221;
