NARAL Pro-Choice America is among the country\u2019s most powerful abortion advocacy groups. Thanks to an interesting set of events<\/a>, I ended up on their email list and started getting getting regular updates. Some of these messages display an impressive level of honesty; granted, it\u2019s usually unintentional.<\/p>\n

You can see that in the email NARAL President Ilyse Hogue sent out last last week. Hogue opens by declaring, \u201cAnti-choice senators are blocking legislation that would help women sold into slavery–unless those survivors are denied access to abortion care.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legislation she’s referring to is the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act<\/a>. Authored by pro-life Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), it would impose tougher sentences on human traffickers while putting confiscated money into a victims\u2019 fund. It also stipulates that the fund isn\u2019t to pay for abortions, which makes sense. Simply put, no one should get the death penalty for his or her\u00a0father\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, that doesn\u2019t sit well with Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)<\/a>. He and other prominent Democrats are refusing<\/a> to let the bill pass unless the provision is removed.<\/p>\n

Hogue is telling the truth when she says the legislation is being blocked by \u201canti-choice senators.\u201d After all, the senators who oppose the bill also support the abortion industry. And if you\u2019re looking for examples of how it helps to deny freedom of choice, you don\u2019t have to look hard.<\/p>\n

Abortion providers offer the \u201cright to choose,\u201d but it\u2019s often not women who exercise it. Coerced abortions<\/a> are a great way for abusive partners to avoid the hassle of child support. They\u2019re also a big help to sexual predators<\/a> hoping to destroy the evidence of their crimes.<\/p>\n

In fact, some studies suggest that\u00a0more than half<\/a> of women who abort due so under pressure. That can include financial coercion<\/a>, threats of personal blackmail<\/a>, or fear of physical violence. The latter frequently turns deadly, with women being shot<\/a>, stabbed<\/a>,\u00a0burned<\/a>, smothered<\/a>, and beaten to death<\/a>. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that homicide is a leading\u00a0cause of death<\/a> among pregnant women.<\/p>\n

Human traffickers make use of abortion too. During his testimony before Texas\u2019 Joint Interim Committee to Study Human Trafficking, Dallas Department of Public Safety officer Jeff Williams asserted that traffickers frequently use<\/a> abortion to keep their victims working. The anti-trafficking group\u00a0A21 Campaign<\/a> has helped to publicize this fact. Below, you can see a video it\u2019s released in which a victim named Nicole mentions being forced into two abortions by her captor.<\/p>\n
