Aaliyah Hart weighed just 12 ounces when she was born three months premature\u00a0in 2003. She was the smallest baby ever to be born in Britain – so tiny that she fit in her mother\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n

However, Aaliyah’s fight to survive began while she was still in her mother’s\u00a0womb. At roughly 20 weeks gestation, Aaliyah had stopped growing, and doctors doubted she would survive. Then at\u00a028 weeks, her mother, Lorraine Hart, went into labor. Hart\u00a0and her husband, Ricardo, had been trying for 10\u00a0years to conceive, and Aaliyah was their miracle baby.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Jeff Bissenden, regional director for Birmingham City Hospital, told\u00a0Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>after Aaliyah was born, \u201cI\u2019m amazed the baby did not die in the womb. I think this baby\u2019s survival is down to the intrinsic toughness of the child, not down to anything we have done.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2013, The Daily Mail<\/a><\/em> updated the world on Aaliyah\u2019s progress. At 10\u00a0years old, she became captain of her school\u2019s football team. Her mother told The Daily Mail<\/em> that her daughter\u00a0loves sports, and excels at running and gymnastics.<\/p>\n

Though her confidence was low due to her small stature, Aaliyah has since caught up to many of her classmates, and her self-esteem has grown. She\u00a0has been awarded\u00a0tasks at school, such as being the “milk monitor,” which allows her some responsibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really like playing football. It\u2019s a lot of fun playing with my friends,\u201d Hart\u00a0told The Daily Mail<\/em>. \u201cBeing the captain makes me feel very proud. I like school, but I really love sports. I know I\u2019m a bit smaller, but I try not to let it make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

During her pregnancy, Aaliyah’s mother\u00a0was told that she should consider abortion. Lorraine Hart told Telegraph<\/em> that she refused to end the life of her child, and would not give up hope while Aaliyah\u2019s heart was still beating. After only a few weeks in the hospital, Aaliyah was able to go home.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a miracle, so beautiful,\u201d Hart told Telegraph<\/em>. \u201cShe was so tiny, but she was so active. Her hands were going; she was her own little person and I cried for a long time. She was surviving \u2013 that was my main concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, nearly a teenager,\u00a0Aaliyah’s\u00a0mother can be proud that her daughter not only defied the odds to survive, but is thriving, as well.<\/p>\n
