In her article \u201cAbortion, a Love Story<\/a>\u201d\u00a0Gila Lyons describes\u00a0an abortion she had.<\/p>\n

Lyons seems to have been aware that\u00a0she was carrying \u00a0a baby. She says:<\/p>\n

Our baby was the size of a lentil, with a poppy-seed heart that beat 167 times per minute, twice the rate of mine. It had veins, brainwaves, arm and leg buds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She has done her research on\u00a0how developed her child is. Sadly, her knowledge is not enough to convince her not to abort. She goes to the clinic and is prepped for the operation.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As she is drifting off into an anesthesia-induced sleep, the abortionist tells Lyons that what she is aborting is \u201cnot anything like a baby.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s just a mass of tissue,\u201d the doctor had said before she put me to sleep. \u201cNot anything like a baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it had a heart,\u201d I thought, or said aloud.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Because Lyons did her research, she knew her baby was more than a mass of tissue.\u00a0 Other women having abortions may not know the facts about fetal development.<\/p>\n

Since Lyons had already been prepped for the abortion, the doctor’s words may not have been calculated to encourage her to agree to the procedure. (Of course, we don\u2019t know what the abortion facility workers said to Lyons earlier that day.) Pro-lifers have long stated\u00a0that clinic workers lie to women about fetal development in order to convince them to have abortions. In Lyons\u2019 case, the abortionist might\u00a0have believed\u00a0that thinking of her-soon-to-be dead preborn baby as a \u201cmass of tissue\u201d would make it easier for her to cope.<\/p>\n

Whatever the motive, other accounts from post-abortion women also reveal dishonesty among clinic workers and staff.<\/p>\n

In Melinda Tankard Reist\u2019s book Giving Sorrow Words: Women\u2019s Stories of Grief after Abortion,<\/em>\u00a0 a woman identified as \u201cSue\u201d said that her doctor also lied to her <\/a>about the development of her baby:<\/p>\n

The doctor said: \u201cDon\u2019t worry, it\u2019s not formed till after 12 weeks.\u201d Then I saw the “Human Body” program [on ABC]. I would not have gone ahead if I\u2019d been told the truth about the formation of the baby.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A preborn baby has developed arms, legs, fingers, and toes <\/a>by seven-and-a-half weeks after conception.<\/p>\n

In fact, if a 7-week-old preborn baby already has a beating heart<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0brain waves<\/a>, \u00a0a liver<\/a>, and even ovaries<\/a> if she is female.<\/p>\n

These are facts some abortionists do not want women to know.<\/p>\n

Sue suffered from regret and guilt after her abortion, as well as anger at\u00a0the abortionist who misled her.<\/p>\n

Gila Lyons conveyed no sense of regret in her article. But it is still bad practice to lie to women about their preborn babies. Women have the right to know exactly what is going on in their bodies.<\/p>\n

One abortionist, Alberto Hodari, who has finally stopped performing abortions after being named in fifty lawsuits, said that abortionists have a right to lie to women. In a 2007 speech at Wayne State University, Hodari said:<\/a><\/p>\n

[M]y wife says we doctors have a license to lie and it\u2019s true. It\u2019s absolutely true. Sometimes you need to lie to a patient about things that they want to do or know, much less now than in the past because they\u2019re more educated between CNN and the internet, the patients are more educated about what we do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do abortionists have \u201ca license to lie?\u201d Even many pro-abortion\u00a0activists would say no. Yet women who\u00a0have\u00a0had abortions continue to say\u00a0that their doctors either lied to them about their babies\u2019 development, or withheld crucial information. \u00a0This is why informed consent laws are needed to ensure that clinics present the truth to women.<\/p>\n

In an ideal world, the right of a mother\u00a0to be fully informed about her pregnancy would be an area of common ground between pro-life and pro-choice forces. The fact that abortion providers fight against such laws and mobilize their followers to do so, too,\u00a0shows that they are really pro-abortion, not pro-choice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
