The label&#8217;s definition is open to debate. However, most people would agree it doesn&#8217;t include sabotaging a bill to protect human trafficking victims simply because the legislation won\u2019t pay for more abortions. Harry Reid isn&#8217;t most people.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has long claimed to have pro-life convictions. In 2009, a <a title=\"Pro-Life Democrat Harry Reid Says He Could Support Abortion Provision in Health-Care Bill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/weblogs\/TWSFP\/2009\/03\/prolife_democrat_harry_reid_sa.asp\" target=\"_blank\">spokesman declared<\/a> that the senator was \u201cstrongly pro-life\u201d and that \u201chis voting record speaks for itself.\u201d It\u2019s certainly true that Senator Reid\u2019s recent record has been speaking volumes; what it\u2019s been saying is anything but pro-life.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Do-not-think-it-means.jpeg\" alt=\"Do-not-think-it-means\" width=\"400\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Do-not-think-it-means.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Do-not-think-it-means-300x259.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While typically associated with other countries, human trafficking exists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justice.gov\/criminal\/ceos\/trafficking.html\">in this one, <\/a>too. Kevin D. Williamson <a title=\"Harry Reid Filibusters on Behalf of Slaveholders\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/415633\/harry-reid-filibusters-behalf-slaveholders-kevin-d-williamson\" target=\"_blank\">recently wrote<\/a> about Ima Matul, an Indonesian teen who was lured to Southern California. Upon arrival, she was forced into a life of brutal captivity.<\/p>\n<p>Ima\u2019s story is <a title=\"Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons\" href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/j\/tip\/\" target=\"_blank\">far from unique<\/a>. To help others like her, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/senate-bill\/178\"> Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act<\/a>. If passed, it would increase the penalties for traffickers while using seized assets to help their victims. Unfortunately, Harry Reid and most of his fellow Senate Democrats have <a title=\"Anti-trafficking bill filibustered by Senate Democrats over provision limiting taxpayer-funded abortion\" href=\"\/news\/anti-trafficking-bill-filibustered-by-senate-democrats-over-provision-limiting-taxpayer-funded-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\">kept that<\/a> from happening.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re upset because the bill doesn&#8217;t allow money taken from convicted traffickers to pay for abortion. The rule makes sense, given how the legislation is aimed at helping the victims of trafficking, not killing them. After all, no one should be put to death for her father\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Not that preborn lives are the only ones at stake, as studies have shown women who undergo abortions are at a higher <a title=\"Suicides after pregnancy in Finland, 1987\u201394\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/313\/7070\/1431\" target=\"_blank\">risk of suicide<\/a>. Meanwhile, others are left tortured by feelings of <a title=\"Women share their post-abortion pain and regret\" href=\"\/news\/women-share-their-post-abortion-pain-and-tegret\/\" target=\"_blank\">sadness and loss<\/a>. This isn&#8217;t the sort of outcome the government needs to be promoting, particularly among women and girls who&#8217;ve already been traumatized.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Senator Reid is blocking a bill to fight human trafficking is shocking. That he\u2019s only doing so because it won\u2019t fund more abortions shows just how bad Reid\u2019s understanding of the term \u201cpro-life\u201d really is (his 92 percent <a title=\"2015 Congressional Scorecard\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plannedparenthoodaction.org\/elections-politics\/congressional-scorecard\/#\/nevada\" target=\"_blank\">approval rating<\/a> from Planned Parenthood is another clue).
