One of the great things about moving to a small town is that people start to recognize you. One of the not so great things? People start to recognize you. That becomes pretty clear when you\u2019re standing in line at Walgreen’s holding a pregnancy test kit. It gets even more obvious when you remember that you\u2019ve recently talked to the cashier about your awesome girlfriend\u2026who lives three time zones away. Now, you may think that if you just explain how you\u2019re buying the kit for a platonic friend who\u2019s too anxious to come in herself, it\u2019ll make things less awkward. It won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Naturally, the difficulty of this experience doesn\u2019t compare with actually taking<\/i> a pregnancy test, particularly if you really don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re ready to be a mom. And, if it comes back positive, then there\u2019s a couple things that you might start hearing. The first is a reminder about how it’s \u201creally hard\u201d being a single parent (as if you didn\u2019t already know that). The second involves an attempt to dehumanize your baby by referring to her or him as \u201cit,\u201d often through questions like, \u201cSo what are you going to do about it?\u201d This can persist even after your child has developed eyes, legs, fingerprints and, according to some research<\/a>, an ability to feel pain. By that point, the effort somehow comes off as both impressive and pathetic at the same time.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The goal, of course, is to make abortion seem like an acceptable alternative to single motherhood. And indeed, a lot of abortion advocates act as though it\u2019s the only<\/i> alternative. If that\u2019s the message you\u2019ve been getting, then there\u2019s a few hundred people<\/a> I want to introduce you to. They\u2019re eager to talk and ready to offer another option. There\u2019s a lot of misconceptions about adoption. One of the most common is that a woman has to turn her baby over to a pair of strangers.
