He had predicted to his wife Sarah right before his death that they would have a daughter to join their two-year-old son Milo &#8211; and he was right. But at just two weeks old, Ellis contracted bacterial meningitis, and after two weeks in the hospital, the doctors told her mother Sarah that her daughter was now incompatible with life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018God, if there\u2019s any way,\u2019\u201d Sarah Rodriguez told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/2015\/02\/20\/doctors-said-this-babys-condition-was-incompatible-with-life-but-when-they-removed-her-ventilator-something-miraculous-happened\/\">The Blaze<\/a>. \u201c\u2019Thirty days is not enough.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_6877-465x620.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6877-465x620\" width=\"465\" height=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_6877-465x620.jpg 465w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_6877-465x620-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ellis was on a ventilator and Sarah felt completely alone. As she told The Blaze, she was holding out for a miracle, but what the doctors were telling her was extremely discouraging. She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;They said there was profound damage to Ellis\u2019 brain. I took that whole rest of the day and I said, \u2018All right, I\u2019m going to say goodbye.\u2019&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sarah cut locks of Ellis\u2019 hair and painted her hands and made handprints and footprints. She wanted to have anything she could to remember her baby girl by. After the doctors removed the ventilator, Sarah was able to rock her daughter and read to her. She waited for her daughter to die, but Ellis defied the doctors and began to breathe on her own.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60455\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8795.jpg\" alt=\"Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset\" width=\"2250\" height=\"3000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8795.jpg 2250w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8795-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8795-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2250px) 100vw, 2250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first hour I was rocking her, I read her a story because I had never gotten the opportunity to give her a story,\u201d Sarah told The Blaze. \u201cI\u2019m giving her permission to leave. I was telling her, \u2018You get to meet your daddy today\u2019 \u2013 to make transition as peaceful as it could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8791.jpg\" alt=\"Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset\" width=\"2250\" height=\"3000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8791.jpg 2250w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8791-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_8791-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2250px) 100vw, 2250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yet Ellis continued to breathe. Doctors told Sarah that Ellis would likely be a \u201cvegetable\u201d and would never be normal.<\/p>\n<p>But she\u2019s had follow-up appointments since being removed from the ventilator and the doctors can find no signs of brain damage. One doctor even told Sarah that Ellis is \u201cabsolutely laughing in the face of medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Sarah still struggles with life after her husband\u2019s death, she tries to keep him a part of their lives. Ellis, whose name means \u201cJehovah is God,\u201d is growing and developing right on track for her age.
