{"id":6003,"date":"2011-08-30T21:07:47","date_gmt":"2011-08-31T01:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/?p=6003"},"modified":"2013-03-30T20:21:19","modified_gmt":"2013-03-31T00:21:19","slug":"how-can-we-change-hearts-and-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-can-we-change-hearts-and-save-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"How can we change hearts and save lives?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/liveaction\" target=\"_blank\">Live Action\u2019s Facebook page<\/a> published a post: \u201c(Fill in the blank): If I had 30 seconds to talk to a woman considering abortion, I would say ____________.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/in-thought.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6013\" style=\"margin: 10px;\" title=\"in-thought\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/in-thought.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a>I thought it was a fantastic post and I immediately looked through the comments, hoping I could find some good ideas to use while sidewalk-counseling abortion-minded women. Instead, I saw a slew of comments that epitomized the pro-abortion view that many pro-lifers just express hateful anti-abortion outrage. At first, I figured the page was being trolled by people who wanted to make pro-lifers look bad&#8211;but as the comments kept being added, I realized that this is exactly how some people view abortion-minded women.<\/p>\n<p>To put it lightly, I was utterly appalled.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->If I were a woman considering or unsure about an abortion, the one thing that would absolutely solidify my decision to abort would be hearing a \u201cpro-lifer\u201d scream \u201cMURDERER!\u201d or \u201cYOU ARE SO STUPID!\u201d It would give me the false sense that I would actually be safer <em>inside <\/em>an abortion clinic. Is this really what we want? To drive women into a place that will inevitably kill her unborn child? Doesn\u2019t hate seem counterproductive here?<\/p>\n<p>I am surrounded by and work with caring, compassionate pro-lifers day in and day out and have been for years, so I have been under the impression that the extremist, misogynistic, stereotypical anti-abortion movement has been withering away and was being replaced with a peaceful, prayerful movement. However, judging from what I recently read on Facebook, I can see that we still have a long way to go to reach that point.<\/p>\n<p>I see how effective a <a href=\"http:\/\/liveaction.org\/blog\/sidewalk-counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\">kind and loving approach <\/a>to those who support or consider abortions can be. I think about young mothers I or my friends have sidewalk counseled\u2014 we offered free help and information to them, and they changed their minds! I think about clinic directors and employees like my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Abby-Johnson-Pro-life-advocate#!\/pages\/Abby-Johnson-Pro-life-advocate\/114382035238545\" target=\"_blank\">Abby Johnson<\/a>. If she had heard the words \u201cYou baby killer! You are going to hell!\u201d day in and day out, instead of \u201cWe love you and care about you!\u201d during <a href=\"http:\/\/www.40daysforlife.com\" target=\"_blank\">40 Days for Life<\/a> vigils, do you really think she would have had a change of heart and come to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Brazos-Valley-Coalition-for-Life\/117161569216\">Coalition for Life<\/a> for help when she had her pro-life conversion? I highly doubt it.<\/p>\n<p>To win this war that we fight today for the unborn, we must change the hearts and minds of those who deem abortion a \u201cright\u201d and educate others on what abortion entails. The only way we can do this is through compassion, patience, and loving outreach\u2014something that not all pro-lifers understand.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that to change the hearts and minds of pro-choicers, we must first change the hearts and minds of pro-lifers. We have to realize that disdain and anger directed toward those who don\u2019t realize the truth about abortion will never change minds or save lives.
