She made it through weeks of nausea, stocking up on baby items in eager anticipation, and at her 20-week ultrasound, she and fianc\u00e9\u00a0Brenden DeJong learned they\u00a0would be having a son.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor scheduled a follow up appointment for three weeks later. That appointment would change her life drastically.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went to our appointment that day and met with a specialist who told us they could not find our baby\u2019s bladder or kidneys,&#8221;\u00a0Orris said. &#8220;We were devastated, and even though we didn\u2019t really know what it meant, we knew it couldn\u2019t have been good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-and-family.jpg\" alt=\"easton and family\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-and-family.jpg 960w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-and-family-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-and-family-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Orris&#8217; doctor told her that her son would likely die in the womb, if not shortly after birth. Then the doctor suggested an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe chose life,\u201d Orris said. \u201cI was not going to make that decision when my baby had a heartbeat still.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next 10 weeks were emotional as\u00a0Orris was on bed rest, wondering what would happen to her son. At 33 weeks gestation, she started to go into labor. She was admitted to the hospital where they spent the next few days trying to keep the baby from being born too soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were coming in and out of our room, telling us what would happen if Easton didn\u2019t come out alive,\u201d\u00a0Orris said. \u201cIt was horrible and too much for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59821\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59821\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Easton-after-surgery-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Easton, just a few weeks old, after surgery.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Easton-after-surgery-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Easton-after-surgery-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Easton-after-surgery.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Easton, just a few weeks old, after surgery.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On June 23, 2013, baby Easton was born via emergency C-section, and\u00a0Orris was relieved that her baby was alive, knowing that Easton was a fighter. He spent six weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit before doctors said they could take Easton home.<\/p>\n<p>Orris\u00a0was nervous as Easton\u2019s doctors gave them specific instructions on caring for him. In addition to ensuring he ate every three hours, Easton needed to be given certain medications every four hours, even through the night.<\/p>\n<p>Every Friday, Easton would need to have lab work done, and a nurse would visit him weekly. He had an ostomy bag to take care of, as well. It was an exhausting schedule, but Orris\u00a0says it was all worth it, and they felt very blessed just to have Easton home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59819\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59819\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-59819 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liveactionnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-sleeping-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"easton sleeping\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-sleeping-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-sleeping-394x700.jpg 394w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/easton-sleeping.jpg 417w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Easton resting at the hospital.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Easton is now nearly 20 months old and has had 15 surgeries, including multiple peritoneal dialysis catheters, multiple hemo dialysis catheters, ostomy, ileostomy, urostomy, hernia repair, a G-tube, a Nissen Fundoplication, and surgery for a tethered spinal cord. He has also had multiple trips to the hospital. According to\u00a0Orris, Easton is not only strong, but a very silly little guy, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEaston\u2019s personality is so funny,\u201d she said. \u201cI seriously have never met a funnier baby. [\u2026] He is very sweet, as well! He loves to make you laugh and loves to laugh along with you. We always have so much fun together! In addition, he has physical therapy once a week, and continues to receive medications each morning and evening. He is fed through his G-tube four times a day and continuously through the night.<\/p>\n<p>This year, he is doing so well that he has spent more time at home than in the hospital. Once he has a kidney transplant, Easton will no longer need dialysis and doctors say it will stay that way for 15 years.
