{"id":59496,"date":"2015-02-11T13:56:54","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T18:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=59496"},"modified":"2015-02-08T14:10:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-08T19:10:00","slug":"human-identity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/human-identity\/","title":{"rendered":"Human identity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In February, 1953, James Watson walked into a bar in England and declared that he and Francis Crick discovered the double helix DNA molecule.\u00a0 Twenty years later in January 1973 the US Supreme Court declared that human abortion was legal.\u00a0 Is there a relationship between these 2 events?\u00a0 Perhaps there is.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the first event should have prevented the second.\u00a0\u00a0 To be fair, it has taken a long time to get from the discovery of the double helix DNA molecule to the point of being able to read it.\u00a0 That is, to be able to actually read the data on the segments of the strand.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve come to learn since that discovery over 60 years ago the DNA contains the complete description of any individual.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>More and more is DNA evidence being used to solve crimes that have been committed years before.\u00a0 Coincidently, DNA evidence has led to the release of prisoners simply because the DNA of the individual accused or imprisoned for a crime can be compared to the DNA evidence collected at the crime scene before DNA testing was available. If the two samples don\u2019t match the conviction can be overturned.<\/p>\n<p>We have come to realize that each individual has a unique DNA description that does not match any other individual.\u00a0 It is a serial number much like the VIN (vehicle identification number) of your car.\u00a0 It was assigned at manufacture.<\/p>\n<p>From the first cell, when egg and sperm combine to make the very first cell, the DNA of the individual is created.\u00a0 When that cell divides, the DNA is replicated exactly.\u00a0 Every cell created after that has the exact same information in it, whether that cell becomes a specialty cell or not.\u00a0 Any one cell has the complete set of plans in it to build the whole person.\u00a0 The blueprint and building instructions are all there describing how to make that individual\u2026what color eyes, hair, height, build, etc\u2026and how to do it.<\/p>\n<p>If an individual gets his VIN from the very first cell he is still the same person whether he is one cell old or 100 years old.\u00a0 He goes through changes over that time period but his identity does not.\u00a0 There are times when he can\u2019t take care of himself and needs his mother\u2019s help or our help\u2026 When he\u2019s in his mother\u2019s womb and can\u2019t get his own nutrients, or when he\u2019s been in an automobile accident and unconscious with a head injury.\u00a0 Perhaps he has polio and can\u2019t breathe without an iron lung.\u00a0 Perhaps he had a stroke and, before his mind can retrain itself\u2026 which may take months, we need to push him around in a wheel chair and feed him with a spoon to keep him alive.\u00a0 Our ability to exist without help should not be a criterion for whether we should be allowed to exist.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we call taking someone else\u2019s life murder.\u00a0 Sometimes we call it justifiable homicide.\u00a0 Perhaps we need to process each and every human abortion in court and determine whether it is a justifiable homicide or murder.\u00a0\u00a0 That determination is something we owe the individual victim whether he can hire an attorney for himself or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In February, 1953, James Watson walked into a bar in England and declared that he and Francis Crick discovered the double helix DNA molecule.\u00a0 Twenty years later in January 1973 the US Supreme Court declared that human abortion was legal.\u00a0 Is there a relationship between these 2 events?\u00a0 Perhaps there is.
