margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The authors of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maneyonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1179\/2050854914Y.0000000026\">the review<\/a>, featured in <em>The Linacre Quarterly<\/em>, put it lightly when they say in the abstract that &#8220;[t]here has been much debate&#8221; regarding whether so-called emergency contraceptives actually work by destroying a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justfactsdaily.com\/the-science-of-abortion-when-does-life-begin\">newly conceived human being<\/a> (that is, a human embryo).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many doctors and researchers,&#8221; the authors elaborate, &#8220;claim that it has either no \u2013 or at most \u2013 an extremely small chance of working via abortion.&#8221;\u00a0 But &#8220;the latest scientific and medical evidence now demonstrates that levonorgestrel emergency contraception theoretically works via abortion quite often.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The review lays out eight arguments &#8220;against an abortifacient effect&#8221; and debunks them, relying in significant part on a study by No\u00e9, et. al in 2010 \u2013 &#8220;the largest study to date to employ serial trasvaginal assessments of follicular size to determine ovulation.&#8221; \u00a0Basically, the information in No\u00e9, along with a number of other studies, shows that Plan B does not delay or otherwise affect ovulation significantly enough to rule out the likelihood of the drug operating after fertilization (i.e., destroying a unique human being).\u00a0 Further, &#8220;there is absence of clinical pregnancy in cases where fertilization is likely, which suggests that abortion is a likely mechanism of action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The claim,&#8221; the authors conclude, &#8220;that moral certitude exists via LNG-EC&#8217;s non-abortifacient action is currently indefensible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Linacre Quarterly<\/em> describes itself as &#8220;the oldest continuously published bioethics journal in the United States.&#8221;\u00a0 It is the official journal of the Catholic Medical Association.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.all.org\/\">American Life League<\/a>, doubtless noticing the Catholic affiliation, has used the review to press the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to come down hard on the administration of emergency contraceptives by Catholic hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanisms of hormonal contraception have always been poorly understood, if only because one cannot pinpoint the exact moment of fertilization.\u00a0 Plan B&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/major-drugstore-chains-now-selling-abortion-inducing-plan-b-shelf\">own label<\/a> proclaims that the drug can cause the death of a unique human embryo \u2013 &#8220;It may also prevent fertilization of a released egg &#8230; or attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterus.&#8221;\u00a0 The term &#8220;fertilized egg&#8221; is misleading, because once an egg is fertilized, it is no longer an egg.\u00a0 There is no spermatazoon at that point, and no ovum, but only a discrete human being, with the full complement of chromosomes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2014\/08\/25\/pregnant-couples-defend-aborting-babies-with-down-syndrome-loving-kids-like-that-is-a-waste\/\">generally<\/a>) and the workings in place to develop and grow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.americanthinker.com\/images\/bucket\/2015-02\/194011_5_.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>This is a human being.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', trebuchet, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;\">ALL&#8217;s president noted that &#8220;Catholic bishops have been assured, by Plan B proponents, that the drug does not cause an abortion[.]&#8221;\u00a0 That Catholic hospitals and other organizations would &#8220;trust&#8221; the purveyors of a product the Church condemns as &#8220;intrinsically evil&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p3s2c2a6.htm\">CCC 2370<\/a>) is problematic to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>But abortion is not just the jurisdiction of the Catholic Church, and the <em>Linacre <\/em>review should have an impact well outside the Vatican.\u00a0 If human beings are inherently precious, then our nation&#8217;s laws should be absolute and consistent in protecting them \u2013 even when they don&#8217;t &#8220;look&#8221;
