\u201cInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.\u201d
\n\u2014 Martin Luther King, Jr.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was April 16, 1963 \u2014 10 years before legalized abortion in the United States \u2014 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. penned the letter that could have been written on behalf of the unborn, as well as the African-American.<\/p>\n

The powerful “Letter from Birmingham Jail”<\/a> still has a message for us. What is astounding now, in 2015 \u2014 as we honor King, and we, likewise, grieve approximately 57 million babies who have died in the past 42 years\u00a0\u2014 is that King, who was vocal then, would doubtlessly be just as vocal now. Ironically, he would not have to change much of his letter, for what we did to African-Americans, we now do to the unborn. And the most tragic irony of all is that African-American babies are aborted at a rate five times greater than white babies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While in jail for his nonviolent stand for civil rights, King penned a letter to eight clergymen who, while they supported his ideals of rights for African-Americans, opposed his methods for seeking justice. These ministers felt that since the law was the law, they had to support it. But what King said over 50 years ago still applies now:<\/p>\n

How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law. To put it in the terms of St. Thomas Aquinas: An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law. Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Applying this criterion to both segregation and abortion, the outcome is the same. Neither serves to “uplift human personality”; neither is just. The proposition that something is legal, therefore we are obligated to support it, is one for which King had a startlingly true response:<\/p>\n

We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal.” It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A holocaust is a systematic extermination, a mass destruction. It is not a stretch to call abortion a holocaust. A life is not any less a life if it dies young. And as King would note, the greatest stumbling block to justice is not the extremist against justice, but the one who is \u201cmoderate\u201d in his stand.<\/p>\n

\"BLACK-N-WANTED_LEARN2\"In 1963, it was the white man \u201cwho is more devoted to \u2018order\u2019 than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: \u2018I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action\u2026.\u2019 Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.\u201d<\/p>\n

King continued, criticizing the inaction of the church, a place he deeply loved and had committed his life to serve. He said:<\/p>\n

There was a time when the church was very powerful…. the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society.\u2026 [T]hey brought an end to such ancient evils as infanticide and gladiatorial contests. Things are different now. So often the contemporary church is a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound… an archdefender of the status quo\u2026.If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will \u2026 be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Abortion is the number one killer of Black Americans.<\/p><\/div>\n

What would King say about the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice<\/a>? The RCRC is filled with United Methodists, ELCA Lutherans, Episcopalians, Presbyterian USA, and other denominations that once supported truth and now support a woman\u2019s right to kill her baby\u00a0\u2014 claiming to do so in the name of equal rights.<\/p>\n

Dr. King\u2019s niece, Alveda King, is a powerful voice for the pro-life movement <\/a>and reminds us often that \u201cUncle Martin\u201d would be horrified by and opposed to abortion.<\/p>\n

His written words from 1963 are a resounding prophecy of what was to come, a time when five times the African-American babies die from abortion than the white babies do. As we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life, we must remember his words, which tell us that passivity is destructive and that of all people, the church should be the culture-changing voice and the power for change right now<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
