Douglas is a professor at the University of Michigan. She&#8217;s also an author, and in a recent <a title=\"It\u2019s Okay To Hate Republicans\" href=\"http:\/\/inthesetimes.com\/article\/17426\/theres_good_reason_to_hate_republicans\" target=\"_blank\">magazine column,<\/a> Ms. Douglas describes her feelings on people she disagrees with. Those feelings aren\u2019t pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>The professor begins by announcing, \u201cI hate Republicans.\u201d She didn\u2019t always have this &#8220;loathing&#8221; toward them, and she even worked for a Republican legislator in the \u201970s. That, however, was before the GOP ruptured \u201ccivilized discourse\u201d by preaching \u201cvilification,\u201d \u201cdenigration,\u201d \u201cintolerance,\u201d and \u201chate speech.\u201d While Ms. Douglas has an extensive vocabulary, the word \u201chypocrisy\u201d doesn\u2019t seem to be in it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One reason the professor \u201ccan\u2019t stand\u201d her political opponents is their habit of \u201cchampioning fetal \u2018personhood.\u2019\u201d Instead, Douglas prefers \u201cmoderate\u201d pro-abortion Republicans who are \u201cprogressive about women\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Republican governor <a title=\"Tom Ridge Ignores Responsibility for Kermit Gosnell, Attacks Pro-Lifers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2013\/10\/31\/tom-ridge-ignores-responsibility-for-kermit-gosnell-attacks-pro-lifers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Ridge<\/a> didn&#8217;t object to abortion. His policies weren\u2019t particularly good for women, but they were a big help to Kermit Gosnell.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013,\u00a0Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell <a title=\"Doctor Kermit Gosnell found guilty of murdering infants in late-term abortions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2013\/05\/13\/jury-split-on-2-counts-in-trial-abortion-doctor-kermit-gosnell\/\" target=\"_blank\">was convicted<\/a> of killing three newborn babies and one patient at his squalid clinic. When authorities raided it, they found filthy conditions, untrained staff, and aborted fetuses rotting in plastic bags.<\/p>\n<p>A subsequent\u00a0<a title=\"The Gosnell Grand Jury Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phila.gov\/districtattorney\/PDFs\/GrandJuryWomensMedical.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">grand jury report<\/a> identified the policies of Gov. Ridge as <a title=\"Pennsylvania state employees fired for ignoring \u2018house of horrors\u2019 abortion clinic \" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/pennsylvania-state-employees-fired-for-ignoring-house-of-horrors-abortion-c\" target=\"_blank\">having enabled<\/a> Gosnell. Soon after taking office in 1993, Ridge ended clinic inspections, meaning that even <em>nail salons<\/em> were subject to greater oversight. The report explained that \u201c[w]ith the change of administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that inspections would be \u2018putting a barrier up to women\u2019 seeking abortions.\u00a0 Better to leave clinics to do as they pleased, even though, as Gosnell proved, that meant both women and babies would pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar problems have been exposed in Delaware \u2013 another state that\u2019s taken a hands-off approach to abortion. Two nurses who worked at Planned Parenthood\u2019s Wilmington clinic <a title=\"A meat-market style of assembly line abortions: Nurses quit Planned Parenthood because of 'dangerous and dirty work conditions and risk of AIDS'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2307143\/A-meat-market-style-assembly-line-abortions-Nurses-quit-Planned-Parenthood-dangerous-dirty-work-conditions.html\" target=\"_blank\">came forward<\/a> in 2013 with accounts of a <a title=\"Former Nurse at Planned Parenthood of Delaware\u2019s Wilmington abortion clinic compares it to Gosnell\u2019s \u201cHouse of Horrors\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalrighttolifenews.org\/news\/2013\/07\/former-nurse-at-planned-parenthood-of-delawares-wilmington-abortion-clinic-compares-it-to-gosnells-house-of-horrors\/#.VEKlVskqR-x\" target=\"_blank\">Gosnell-like <\/a>environment: Jayne Mitchell-Werbrich and Joyce Vasikonis spoke of\u00a0 \u201cmeat market\u201d conditions in which patients were put at risk by bloody tables and unsterilized equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Substandard practices were <a title=\"Rogue Abortion Provider\u2019s Medical License Revoked\" href=\"http:\/\/rhrealitycheck.org\/article\/2014\/10\/09\/rogue-abortion-providers-medical-license-revoked\/\" target=\"_blank\">also found<\/a> at an abortion clinic owned by the disgraced Dr. Steven C. Brigham in neighboring Maryland. Human remains turned up in a freezer at the Baltimore facility after an\u00a0eighteen year-old patient suffered serious injuries there in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, pro-life Republicans want to protect women through <a title=\"Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs into law a bill allowing surprise inspections for abortion clinics\" href=\"\/news\/arizona-gov-jan-brewer-signs-into-law-a-bill-allowing-surprise-inspections-for-abortion-clinics\/\" target=\"_blank\">surprise inspections<\/a> of abortion facilities and by establishing basic clinic safeguards. Others, like Michigan state senator <a title=\"sen. Judy Emmons\" href=\"http:\/\/www.senatorjudyemmons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Judy Emmons<\/a>, are working to <a title=\"Abortion coercion bills clear Michigan Senate\" href=\"http:\/\/michiganradio.org\/post\/abortion-coercion-bills-clear-michigan-senate\" target=\"_blank\">protect moms<\/a> from abortions arranged under coercion.<\/p>\n<p>And although Susan Douglas might think that efforts to defend pre-born children are a threat to her rights, most women don&#8217;t seem to agree. A 2013 Quinnipiac poll indicated that <a title=\"Guess who likes the GOP\u2019s 20-week abortion ban? Women.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/the-fix\/wp\/2013\/08\/02\/guess-who-likes-the-gops-20-week-abortion-ban-women\/\" target=\"_blank\">sixty percent<\/a> of American women support a ban on abortions after twenty weeks. It should also be noted that in November&#8217;s election, loudly pro-abortion politicians like Mark Udall and Wendy Davis either saw their share of female <a title=\"Mark Udall\u2019s Reproduction Obsession Made Women Voters Consider Him A Pervert\" href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2014\/11\/06\/mark-udalls-reproduction-obsession-made-women-voters-consider-him-a-pervert\/\" target=\"_blank\">votes fall<\/a> or <a title=\"Greg Abbott Crushes Wendy Davis in GOP Sweep\" href=\"http:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2014\/11\/04\/abbott-crushes-wendy-davis-gop-sweep\/\" target=\"_blank\">lost the majority<\/a> of women altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-lifers of all political stripes have a crucial role to play in fighting for women and children. That&#8217;s probably going to earn more hatred from Prof. Douglas. Unfortunately, there are bigger problems to worry about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Susan J.
