Live Action has looked into key elements of Ms. Christie\u2019s testimony and personal story and has found them to be credible. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last January, I was traveling on business, staying in a little hotel in a college town.\u00a0 I like to think I&#8217;m usually more aware of my surroundings, but it was so snowy and windy that I wouldn&#8217;t have heard his footsteps even if he had he been stomping.\u00a0 It happened so fast.\u00a0 I got the door open, turned around to close it, and he was there &#8211; a huge man.\u00a0 My first instinct wasn&#8217;t fear, just confusion.\u00a0 In an instant, he punched me in the face.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember being dragged from the room, but I was found in the stairwell.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know why &#8211; maybe I was trying to go for help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fliveaction%2Fvideos%2F10155995093648728%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The rape kit came back negative for HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, and dozens of other things I&#8217;d never heard of.\u00a0 God is gracious.<\/p>\n<p>The following month, I was scheduled to work on a cruise ship.\u00a0 Struck with dysentery on day two and not getting better with antibiotics, I was taken to what passes for a hospital when we docked in Cartagena, Colombia.\u00a0 Concerned about intestinal obstruction, I was given an ultrasound.\u00a0\u00a0 And we saw the pea &#8211; my son.\u00a0 Happy Valentine&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p>Back on the ship, I told the doctors an abbreviated version of my story, which resulted in me being quarantined.\u00a0 Suicide watch?\u00a0 In danger of a psychotic break that will have me running naked across the shuffleboard courts?\u00a0 Who knows.\u00a0 What I know is that I spent the next week listening to a team of very well meaning doctors and nurses console me with how &#8220;easy&#8221; it would be to &#8220;take care of it&#8221; &#8211; to kill the child.\u00a0 To start over.\u00a0 Easy???<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-PPgz0c0t7ps\/VIXT2SwwCjI\/AAAAAAAAHUo\/TxJ8Wd0lzaI\/s1600\/Jennifer%2BChristie's%2B%2Bhusband%2Band%2Bbaby.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-PPgz0c0t7ps\/VIXT2SwwCjI\/AAAAAAAAHUo\/TxJ8Wd0lzaI\/s1600\/Jennifer%2BChristie's%2B%2Bhusband%2Band%2Bbaby.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>There were a lot of things discussed over scratchy, tearful transatlantic phone calls home that week, but the possibility of &#8220;taking care of it&#8221; never came off my lips.\u00a0 Or my husband&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>When I told him I was pregnant, he said with his voice calm and steady, &#8220;Okay.\u00a0 Okay . . . all right . . . this is all right.&#8221;\u00a0 I asked him, &#8220;What do you MEAN this is all right?&#8221; \u00a0&#8220;I mean we can do this. \u00a0We&#8217;ll get through this.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll be okay.\u00a0 And, . . . I love babies.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to have another baby.\u00a0 Sweetheart, this is a gift. \u00a0This is something wonderful from something terrible.\u00a0 We can DO this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And I began to feel the stirrings of joy for the new life in my womb, blossoming under my heart.\u00a0 That new love that would grow so fierce it overwhelmed any trepidation or angst.\u00a0 And my husband was right.\u00a0 We could do it.<\/p>\n<p>On my last morning aboard the ship, I said to this caring team, &#8220;If you ever think about this again, if you ever wonder what happened to me &#8212; I had a beautiful baby in October 2014.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Their reaction . . . , the looks on their faces . . . , the doctor who had pushed abortion more vehemently than the others &#8212; she had tears in her eyes.\u00a0 For the first time, I thought of how God can use this, this nightmare I&#8217;d endured.\u00a0 Use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">me<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>I live in North Carolina.\u00a0 My OB who delivered my last two children was running in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.\u00a0 He talks to people all the time who challenge him with the &#8220;What about in cases of rape?&#8221; question.\u00a0 What about them?\u00a0 My son will have a voice.\u00a0 Until he can use it, it&#8217;s my responsibility &#8211; my privilege &#8211; to speak for him.\u00a0 That&#8217;s my story.<\/p>\n<p>During my pregnancy, I was in and out of the hospital for a couple of months &#8211; more in than out.\u00a0 I had preeclampsia, high blood pressure and uncontrolled seizures.\u00a0 It was terrifying at 26 weeks when they admitted me saying they might have to deliver that night &#8211; terrifying because I desperately wanted my son to live!\u00a0 We got past that fear.\u00a0 I had strict bed rest, but was home.\u00a0 Every week we made it further was awesome, knowing how glad I&#8217;d be once he got here safely in my arms.\u00a0 Emotionally, I was doing very well.<\/p>\n<p>We were working with a really godly team of doctors.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just a matter of trusting utterly.\u00a0 This wasn&#8217;t new.\u00a0 I&#8217;d felt completely out of control since the assault in January &#8211; not that &#8220;control&#8221; is ever anything but an illusion, but, you know.\u00a0 8-1\/2 months ago the world upended and hadn&#8217;t righted since &#8211; until my son was born.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a bad thing.\u00a0 It keeps me on my knees, keeps me from my arrogant, self reliant &#8220;It&#8217;s okay, God. I got this&#8221; attitude, which I&#8217;m so quick to adopt.<\/p>\n<p>Our little boy may have been conceived in violence, but he is a gift from God &#8212; a delicious gift that filled the hole in our family that we never realized was there.\u00a0 He made us complete.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m so thankful to have been connected to other mothers who became pregnant by rape as well.\u00a0 We are survivors.\u00a0 Not victims.\u00a0 My son has healed me.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure to abort from the medical community was extremely eye opening to me.\u00a0 So many times I was told how &#8220;simple&#8221; it would be and how quickly I could just &#8220;get on with my life&#8221; once it was over.\u00a0 It was heartbreaking to have to repeatedly hear it.\u00a0 Even some friends thought keeping the baby was a mistake &#8211; that I wouldn&#8217;t be able to handle things emotionally.\u00a0 Every time we, as rape survivor mothers, share our stories, we are strengthened as we strengthen others. . . .\u00a0 And who knows what lives might be spared?<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note: This article was first published elsewhere\u00a0and was reprinted here with permission in 2014.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s Note:\u00a0Live Action works to maintain the highest standards of journalistic integrity.
