Poor pro-aborts. In Tuesday\u2019s midterm elections, voters gave pro-life candidates a majority of U.S.\u00a0Senate seats, House offices, and governor\u2019s mansions, not to mention\u00a0hundreds of\u00a0state senate and house seats.<\/p>\n

Abortionism\u2019s Chosen One, Wendy Davis, lost by a staggering (but not surprising) twenty points<\/a>. Not even the War on Women\u2019s TM<\/sup> Paul Revere, Sandra Fluke, could avoid a 2-1 loss in California<\/em><\/a>. Planned Parenthood Action Fund singled out<\/a>\u00a0Thom Tillis, Cory Gardner, Terri Lynn Land, Joni Ernst, Scott Brown, and Dan Sullivan as the \u201cExtreme Six\u201d\u2014yet the only one they beat,\u00a0Brown, agreed with them\u00a0on abortion.<\/p>\n

Polling indicates<\/a> 23% of voters said abortion was the deciding factor in voting for a pro-life candidate, compared to just 16% for whom it made or broke their support for a pro-choice one.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the handling of the War on Women narrative by candidates like Mark Udall was so ham-fisted and one-note<\/a> that it\u2019s devolved into a punch line to all but the most diehard lefties\u2014even in New York, just uttering the phrase in a debate gets you laughed at<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Their only notable victories were the defeats of Colorado and North Dakota’s personhood measures<\/a>, but a Tennessee constitutional amendment forbidding judicial activists from inventing a state constitutional right to abortion or abortion funding won by six points despite a 3-1 funding disadvantage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Taken all together, a few things are clear: the electorate is not yet ready to totally end abortion, but they\u2019re moving in that direction. They trust pro-life politicians more than pro-abortion ones. And the argument that abortion is a precious good in need of defense is falling on deaf ears, as is the idea of birth control being under siege.<\/p>\n

So if your career is to shill for abortion-on-demand, how do you spin all that? If you\u2019re NARAL President Ilyse Hogue, you try telling the gullible folks at RH Reality Check<\/a> that \u201ceven anti-choice victories show we\u2019re making process.\u201d Yes, really:<\/p>\n

Seven in 10 Americans<\/a>\u00a0support legal access to abortion. This fact remains true in red states, across demographics, and includes a majority of self-identified Republicans and Independents. Tuesday night\u2019s results actually underscore that reality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Gee, a poll that NARAL themselves commissioned and phrased the choice<\/a> they wanted moderates to pick in a loaded way\u2014\u201cI am personally against abortion for myself and my family, but I don\u2019t believe government should prevent a woman from making that decision for herself<\/em>\u201d (no mention of the kid she\u2019s \u201cchoosing\u201d into the grave)\u2014finds that NARAL\u2019s agenda is overwhelmingly popular! Imagine that! But in a development I\u2019m sure<\/em> is purely coincidental, it\u2019s an outlier\u2014CNN<\/a>, Marist, and Gallup<\/a>\u00a0agree that between 56% and 59% of Americans\u00a0want to ban most or all abortions. The NARAL position of\u00a0always<\/em>\u00a0legal? 27%\u00a0(CNN 2014), 16% (Marist 2014), and 25% (Gallup 2012).<\/p>\n

2014 will go down in the books as the year that anti-choice candidates\u00a0ran hard<\/a>\u00a0from their clear anti-choice track records in order to convince voters they could be trusted on women\u2019s fundamental freedoms. Even they can no longer deny that running on a platform of knowing better than the women you serve about what\u2019s best for them is an untenable political position. New Colorado senator Cory Gardner was the poster child for this approach. Rep. Gardner is\u00a0still a sponsor\u00a0<\/a>of the federal \u201cpersonhood\u201d bill that would outright ban abortion and many forms of birth control. Yet, on the campaign trail, he denied again and again thatsuch a bill even existed<\/a>. Gardner\u00a0also implied<\/a>\u00a0that his support for making the pill available over the counter should trump his earlier stance: making it illegal.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t the only one. In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker\u2014with an eye toward a presidential run in 2016\u2014recorded a\u00a0straight-to-camera ad<\/a>\u00a0where he insisted that he supports a woman\u2019s right to make her own decisions about pregnancy, despite\u00a0all evidence to the contrary<\/a>. In Iowa, state Sen. Joni Ernst claimed that her support for a \u201cpersonhood\u201d bill (again, which would ban all abortion and many common forms of birth control)\u00a0was \u201csimply a statement that I support life<\/a>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Unfortunately, there\u2019s a bit more truth to this one<\/a>\u2014Walker\u2019s ad was about as mealy-mouthed as it gets, and Gardner turned in some of the most mind-bogglingly dishonest campaign moments ever caught on camera\u2014but it\u2019s not as if they endorsed abortion-on-demand.<\/p>\n

Walker still maintained<\/a> his opposition to abortion and taxpayer funding of abortion. Gardner framed his reversal on personhood legislation entirely around contraception, not abortion. And just last month, Ernst actually endorsed<\/a> federal legislation to protect babies from fertilization onward.<\/p>\n

Besides, the fact remains that Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and EMILY\u2019S List\u2019s advertising made sure voters knew exactly what they thought of these candidates\u2019 personhood stances. And voters didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

So what does Hogue suggest pro-aborts do to win next time around? Her game plan basically amounts to doubling down on everything voters rejected last week: aggressively insist abortion is \u201can issue of fundamental freedoms and human rights,\u201d harp on abortion non-stop everywhere they can, and continue relying on courts to sidestep that whole pesky \u201cdemocracy\u201d thing.<\/p>\n
