It sounds like you should be. According to anthropologist <a title=\"Shoulder-shrugging: the durable kind of tolerance\" href=\"http:\/\/cultureby.com\/2014\/05\/shoulder-shrugging-the-durable-kind-of-tolerance.html\" target=\"_blank\">Grant McCracken<\/a>, Hollywood has blessed us with \u201can accomplishment of some real significance.\u201d In fact, McCracken insists that Hollywood and the public school system are \u201cthe most effective players\u201d when it comes to battling \u201centrenched hostility, racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, and xenophobia.\u201d To benefit from some of this valuable moral guidance (and because it was raining), I decided to watch the 2008 Hollywood blockbuster <em>Tropic Thunder<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Ben Stiller, and Jack Black, the film\u2019s content does seem to suggest that Hollywood is no longer a fan of racial animus, hatred of Jews, dislike for gays, or mistrust towards <a title=\"Alien (creature in Alien franchise)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alien_%28creature_in_Alien_franchise%29\" target=\"_blank\">xenomorphs<\/a>. Mocking people with developmental challenges? Oh no, apparently they\u2019re still fair game. The movie includes an ostensibly humorous scene in which an actor is criticized for having gone \u201cfull retard\u201d in his portrayal of a disabled individual. The character is also referred to as a \u201cmoron,\u201d \u201cimbecile,\u201d stupid ass\u201d and \u201cthe dumbest motherf&#8211;ker who ever lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After hearing this dialogue, I felt like Grant McCracken\u2019s \u201cmost effective players\u201d could improve their game a little. On the other hand, perhaps we <em>should<\/em> show some gratitude to Hollywood, as it could be a lot worse. After all, people with disabilities were just being laughed at in this movie. In contrast, the abortion lobby actually wants to see them dead.<\/p>\n<p>Famed anti-theist <a title=\"Richard Dawkins: 'immoral' not to abort if foetus has Down's syndrome\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2014\/aug\/21\/richard-dawkins-immoral-not-to-abort-a-downs-syndrome-foetus\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Dawkins<\/a> was asked earlier this year what a pregnant woman should do if the baby she&#8217;s carrying has Down syndrome. <a title=\"Richard Dawkins: 'immoral' not to abort if foetus has Down's syndrome\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2014\/aug\/21\/richard-dawkins-immoral-not-to-abort-a-downs-syndrome-foetus\" target=\"_blank\">His response<\/a>? \u201cAbort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice.\u201d While the reply made headlines, Dawkins&#8217; view seems to fairly common: studies show that the <a title=\"End the Down syndrome holocaust today\" href=\"\/news\/end-the-down-syndrome-holocaust-today\/\" target=\"_blank\">overwhelming majority<\/a> of children with Down syndrome are aborted upon discovery.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just those with down syndrome who are put to death. As Live Action author <a title=\"Nancy Flanders\" href=\"\/news\/author\/nancy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Flanders<\/a> has reported, children with cystic fibrosis often <a title=\"Prenatal Diagnosis and Reproductive Justice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aul.org\/2010\/03\/prenatal-diagnosis-and-reproductive-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\">meet the same fate<\/a>. This seems to be due in part to the belief that children with CF are guaranteed to have a terrible quality of life, something that simply isn\u2019t true. Recently, Nancy highlighted the stories of athlete <a title=\"Abortion is not the answer for a child with cystic fibrosis and this proves it\" href=\"\/news\/abortion-is-not-the-answer-for-a-child-with-cystic-fibrosis-and-this-proves-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Mitchell<\/a> and activist <a title=\"Children should not be put to death because of a health diagnosis and this girl\u2019s video shows us why\" href=\"\/news\/children-should-not-be-put-to-death-because-of-a-health-diagnosis-and-this-girls-video-shows-us-why\/\" target=\"_blank\">Claire Wineland,<\/a> two high school students who are defying stereotypes about what life with CF looks like.<\/p>\n<p>The push to abort those with health issues can even lead to collateral victims, as a woman in Australia found out two years ago. The woman was carrying twins but was told one of them had a congenital heart defect that would necessitate extensive medical treatment. She elected to abort the afflicted baby, but learned that medical staff at the Royal Women\u2019s Hospital in Melbourne had actually killed <a title=\"Woman pregnant with twins loses both after she agrees to abort one with heart defect\u2026 and doctors get wrong foetus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2065670\/Woman-pregnant-twins-agrees-abort-sick-foetus-doctors-terminate-healthy-one.html\" target=\"_blank\">her healthy child<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>One way that pro-lifers can address this problem is by <a title=\"Senator Vulakovich introduces \u201cChloe\u2019s Law\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/www.senatorvulakovich.com\/2014\/04\/17\/senator-vulakovich-introduces-chloes-law\/\" target=\"_blank\">supporting legislation<\/a> like Pennsylvania\u2019s Down Syndrome Prenatal Education Act. Also known as \u201cChloe\u2019s Law,\u201d it requires that when a doctor makes a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome, he or she must also inform the child\u2019s mother about the full range of available support along with facts about the quality of life that children with Down syndrome often enjoy. The law\u2019s namesake is Chloe Kondrich, an 11 year-old who watched Gov. Tom Corbett sign the bill into law and then took time <a title=\"New Down syndrome law ensures moms-to-be greater access to available help\" href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/news\/health\/2014\/07\/18\/Chloe-s-law-expected-to-give-support-to-women\/stories\/201407180012\" target=\"_blank\">to read to him<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similar legislation has been passed in Kentucky and <a title=\"New Mass. Law may help curb Down syndrome abortions\" href=\"\/news\/new-mass-law-may-help-curb-down-syndrome-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Massachusetts<\/a>. Unfortunately, these laws are <a title=\"Pennsylvania Law Requires Doctors to Read Scripts to Pregnant Patients With Prenatal Down Syndrome Diagnoses (Updated)\" href=\"http:\/\/rhrealitycheck.org\/article\/2014\/07\/25\/pennsylvania-law-requires-doctors-read-scripts-pregnant-patients-prenatal-syndrome-diagnoses\/\" target=\"_blank\">under attack<\/a> by pro-abortion advocates such as Pennsylvania state <a title=\"Sen. Mike Stack\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stackforpa.com\/issues\/womensrights\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Mike Stack.<\/a> The state senator called Chloe\u2019s Law \u201cshameful\u201d and said that such efforts \u201cmust stop.\u201d As pro-lifers, we should make it clear to Mr. Stack and other opponents that being different isn\u2019t a crime and it certainly shouldn\u2019t carry a death sentence. And, since Hollywood hasn\u2019t taken up the issue, it\u2019s up to us to pick up the slack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you grateful to Hollywood?
