{"id":54091,"date":"2014-09-30T11:15:34","date_gmt":"2014-09-30T15:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"\/news\/?p=54091"},"modified":"2014-10-01T01:55:51","modified_gmt":"2014-10-01T05:55:51","slug":"proposed-siecus-sex-education-curriculum-for-grades-k-12-under-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/proposed-siecus-sex-education-curriculum-for-grades-k-12-under-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed SIECUS sex education curriculum for grades K-12 under fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Last week in Clark County (Las Vegas), NV, the local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jrn.com\/ktnv\/news\/Proposed-sex-ed-changes-at-the-kindergarten-level-CCSD-parents-outraged-276420661.html\">school board meeting was flooded with parents<\/a>, furious about sex education proposals in the Clark County School District (CCSD). While the superintendent denies that Kindergartners would be taught about masturbation, as the media has reported, he does not deny that discussion is happening to change the sex education curriculum, and that the source of those proposed changes is a document which does call for children to learn about masturbation at a young age\u2014as well as abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed curriculum is based on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.gsu.edu\/~wwwche\/Sex%20ed%20class\/guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education<\/a>, known from Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). These guidelines were developed by a task force that included members from Planned Parenthood, \u00a0the National Education Association, and American Medical Association.\u00a0Planned Parenthood had the most members of any organization on the original task force at three and was also a part of the latest update panel.<\/p>\n<p>This document is a framework for sex education curriculum from Kindergarten to grade 12, and it contains some disturbing aspects about abortion.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The curriculum is divided into ages at which certain aspects are taught. Abortion is covered from Kindergarten to 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade. SIECUS presents it in Kindergarten this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAbortion&#8230; When a woman becomes pregnant and chooses not to have a child, she has the option of having an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelopmental Messages: \u201cLevel 1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>Sometimes women become pregnant when they do not want to be or are unable to care for a child.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Level 1 is targeted for ages 5-8\u2014and the messages at levels higher than that are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-54093\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Capture2-159x300.jpg\" alt=\"Capture\" width=\"159\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Capture2-159x300.jpg 159w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Capture2.jpg 339w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With these levels in mind, here are the levels of abortion pedagogy involved at each level in the SIECUS curriculum:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-54119\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion-SIECUS.jpg\" alt=\"abortion-SIECUS\" width=\"490\" height=\"739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion-SIECUS.jpg 490w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion-SIECUS-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion-SIECUS-464x700.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccsd.net\/district\/news\/general\/2014\/sep\/26\/clarifying-misconceptions-about-a-debate-on-sex-education\" target=\"_blank\">wrote\u00a0 Friday, clarifying<\/a> the controversy, and insisting no one was going to teach a 5-year-old to masturbate:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are not, nor have we ever, considered teaching masturbation to kindergarteners\u2026. I agree with parents who spoke up and said they don\u2019t want this in their schools.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While it\u2019s comforting to know that much, Skorkowsky does not deny any other controversy, instead saying only that the SIECUS document<em> was<\/em> the basis of their discussion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe 2013 legislature considered a bill, AB 230, which would have mandated a more comprehensive sex education curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, there was a discussion about a document from a group \u2026 SIECUS. This group is made up of various organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National School Boards Association and American School Health Association, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody in the legislature suggested adopting the SIECUS document wholesale. Instead, they looked at the document as a starting point for a conversation about what to teach in schools because it is very comprehensive and includes any and all topics that COULD be part of a sex education curriculum.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He adds that he expects this topic to arise in the next legislative session, so they began forums for discussions. This was also a source of controversy. Some parents felt like they were not allowed to offer input. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/las-vegas-parents-shock-schools-plan-teach-five-year-olds-about-masturbation-1467068\" target=\"_blank\">International Business Times<\/a> reported today on the \u201cinvitation only,\u201d noting \u201cone of the parents who attended the &#8216;community input&#8217; meeting\u2026 felt there should have been a wider parental involvement in such a decisive change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another question many have is why they are using a document that is so fringe it does propose teaching Kindergartners about masturbation\u2014even if the school doesn&#8217;t plan to. The document itself covers so many extremes that it may be a troubling document for many, even as a starting point. On masturbation, it says: at Level 1 (ages 5-8):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-54120\" src=\"\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion2-SIECUS.jpg\" alt=\"abortion2-SIECUS\" width=\"384\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion2-SIECUS.jpg 384w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/abortion2-SIECUS-300x137.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The guidelines in the SIECUS document that CCSD is using to frame its discussion also address sexual fantasy and experimentation, among other things that parents find objectionable. If CCSD has no interest in teaching such polar extremes of the sexual spectrum, it might consider using an entirely different source to begin discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Previously CCSD has had an \u201cabstinence-based\u201d sex education policy, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/news\/las-vegas\/ccsd-offer-online-sex-education-classes\">at a recent board meeting<\/a>, some members said that in this era, students need more \u201ccomprehensive\u201d sex education.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationnews.org\/parenting\/sex-education-changes-in-las-vegas-rile-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\"> reports also say<\/a> that currently CCSD\u2019s sex education program is opt-in, where parents make a decisive decision to let their child take the classes, but the new policy may be opt-out, where the default lies with children taking it.<\/p>\n<p>Many are watching to see how much, if any, of SIECUS guide will be followed. The document says, \u201cFamilies should provide children\u2019s first education about sexuality,\u201d but immediately after that SIECUS notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIn a pluralistic society, people should respect and accept the diversity of values and beliefs about sexuality that exist in a community.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>CCSD says it is still seeking community input on the new sex education program, and if the controversy sparked already is any indication, it will get much more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week in Clark County (Las Vegas), NV, the local school board meeting was flooded with parents, furious about sex education proposals in the Clark County School District (CCSD).
